New Advice on cellphones?
Here is the situation. I am preparing for a long trip (more on that another time), and need a phone that works up and down the West Coast - including in Canada. I would like a plan under which expenses for this are not too exorbitant. (I plan to be on the phone for a bit.)

Karsten told me that out West you get good coverage with Sprint and Verizon. But Sprint wouldn't tell me that their phone works in Canada, and I called too late to find out what Verizon had to say.

So, does anyone have any advice on who I should be looking into phones from, and whether I will be able to get coverage into Canada?

Alternate approach: Get a minimally functional phone call and a calling plan, plan on calling people back. Doesn't work so well if I am not near a phone, which I often might not be.

Cheers,
Ben

New try tmobile, cingular for best coverage rates
problem is that cross border calling is expensive, and roaming fees will apply.

In what countries can I take my Verizon Wireless phone and be able to make and receive calls?

You can use your tri-mode Verizon Wireless phone in:

Canada, Mexico, (Region 1 - Tijuana, Region 4 -Monterray, Region 5 - Guadalajara, Region 6 - Leon, Region 7 - Vera Cruz and Puebla, Region 8 - Cancun and Cozumel, Region 9 - Mexico City), Puerto Rico, South Korea

If you plan to travel to other international locations, Verizon Wireless offers International Traveler\ufffd, a product exclusively for Verizon Wireless customers with service provided by Rent-a-Phone. For more details on the program, including equipment requirements, pricing and service availability please contact Customer Service at 1-800-711-8300 or visit our webpage at internationaltraveler.verizonwireless.com.

So it looks like verizon would work for you, but I'd continue your attempts to contact them. YMMV, IANACPE, etc...
