New [rumor]Hussein and Sons possibly killed.
Mr. Hussein and two sons possibly captured by U.S. forces, according to local news as told to them by NBC. No further details at this time.

TV said "captured", went to ad break, came back, said killed when U.S. dropped some bombs on a bunker. I'll believe it when I see the bodies.
After 9/11, Bush made two statements:
1. "Terrorists hate America because America is a land of freedom and opportunity."
2. "We intend to attack the root causes of terrorism."

Sounds like everything is going according to plan.

New If true that is the lead post of the month (year)

All we need is a report that OBL has been captured (ya never know if cunning old Rummy has something that up his sleeve just waiting to trump all his critics & enemies (just joking)).

Cheers

Doug

kilt, not captured, says radio and all sites alluding to episode at this time (1900 PDT). But we've been down this road a few times recently.

WASHINGTON -- The United States struck a "leadership target" in Baghdad Monday, military officials said.

The target was believed to be one or more of the top government or military leaders in Saddam Hussein's regime, the officials said, speaking on condition of anonymity.

The strike was the result of "time sensitive" intelligence, meaning information which needed to be acted on quickly, the officials said.

The military officials said they did not know the identity of the target of the strike, or whether the target or targets had been killed.

FWIW.

Also, NPR is saying the Administration is saying an Iraqi leadership target (including Saddam and his sons) was attacked, but they didn't know if there were any casualties there.

Regards,
Scott.

New Appears we are now...
Getting better "inside" information from the more Senior Iraqi Officials... and augmentation from Tapping some types of wired/directional wireless communications...

Aparently a few 5000lb Bunker Buster Bombs... plus some precision guided munitions to soften the targets upper layers first...

New According to Fox News ...
US Special Forces actually saw Saddam going into the building and called down the air strike.
New In Oz we were told that it was a house in the
Al Mansour (upmarket) disctrict & that 4 JDAM 2000lb bombs were dropped in succession.

These JDAMs are *not* bunker busting bombs.

One story is that it was Saddam & other senior Iraqi officials gathering for a meeting and that the house concealed an underground bunker.

Other reports speak of SH being in a restaurant in the district at 2pm on Mon when it was hit.

Of course this is early words - also we keep hearing that US authorities are highly optomistic that the bombing achieved its goal.

New Arnett believes Saddam wasn't there
After the bombing, there were lots of grieving civilians looking for "women, children and some men as well". The press had free access to the site as well. His take is that if Saddam had been in the buiding, the site would have been swamped by security forces, and the press and neighborhood residents would not have been allowed in the area.

Secondary thought was that the place (a restaurant) was much to insecure for Saddam to enter to begin with.
