John C. Dvorak writes in his latest article in PC Magazine that Windows is doomed. The end of the line for Windows is coming up, replaced by a re-write named Longhorn, due out in 2005.

It isn't on [link|http://www.pcmag.com/|http://www.pcmag.com/] yet, they still have last issue's articles up on the front page. I have the April 22, 2003 issue, page 61. My subscription has not yet expired to PC Magzine, apparently. So I don't have a link to reference yet.

But wasn't NT supposed to be a re-write? That is what they said, but it was more of a MS-OS/2 1.X base when NT 3.1 came out. Then they added some code from Windows 3.X to make it look like program Manager. Then later NT 4.0 borrowed the GUI from Windows 9X. I wonder if Windows 2005/2006 (aka Longhorn) will borrow code from the current Windows for the GUI, etc?

Personally I'll stick with Windows 98 or XP myself, until more apps get converted to Linux, or WINE improves to the point of running some of the stuff that is currently unrunnable on it.

I guess the current Windows driver models are not going to work on Longhorn. I wonder if they too will get a database file entry?

Microsoft could set up their own Internet based on the .NET SQL Server by storing web pages as database records on their main server and renting out space for it to the clients.
