New Actually that's one fifth of all office users.
Because of the damage and destruction to so many large office towers, New York's total office space has been reduced by about 20% overall.

New I wonder if it's time to think about 'scale'
No, I don't mean - react with fear of concentration as "a target" - just: whether there is any actual advantage to having so many diverse (however finance-related) operations in One Huge Place?

Renewal of other neighborhoods could be a byproduct of the necessary rebuilding. Or *must* we react mindlessly, simply to "show them we'll build it taller and better"? Are we yet over, Bigger Must be Better?

With NY's superb transporation system, surely the spreading of 9-5 mass movements could always be better accommodated via a dispersal: and via fibre - you'd retain the same connections amongst all those workstations dealing with imaginary 'money' / 1s, 0s.

Such an intentional deconcentration would also set the stage for - much more decentralization, the 'work at home' option now clearly as emotion-effective as it is cost-effective (for at least significant portions of many businesses).

  1. I've read it before; and
  2. I ignored it and marked it read the first time.
