New Locals cheering our troops in Basra
[link|http://www.washingtontimes.com/commentary/20030326-73869520.htm|Well, how about that]

Excerpt:

"Coming into Basra as part of a massive military convoy, I encountered a stream of young men, dressed in what appeared to be Iraqi army uniforms, applauding the U.S. Marines as they swept past in tanks," David Willis, the British Broadcasting Corporation's correspondent in southern Iraq, reported Saturday night.
It must have pained him to do it. No Western broadcast news organization outside of France has been as vociferously anti-American as has the BBC.

I say:

Regular Iraqi army, I presume. Not the so-called "Iraqi people" but merely people who have the misfortune to live in Iraq.

Sounds like the Beeb is hedging its bets now, thinking maybe they can't get away with as much misrepresentation as they thought they could.
The future is leaving the station, the US is at the throttle, and the Left isn't on board.

New This is not terribly meaningful.
This is a country where demonstrating in favor of whoever's in power is normal and expected. Not doing so is considered "career threatening". Last week they marched in praise of Sadam Hussain just as enthusiastically. Once our troops withdraw, they'll demonstrate in praise of whatever local warloard is in charge, or Iran, or whatever.

New Ah! The "Vicar of Bray" approach
...to living with regime change.

And this is law, I will maintain
Unto my Dying Day, Sir.
That whatsoever King may reign,
I will be the Vicar of Bray, Sir!

New As I understand it the Brits have *NOT* entered Basra but

are surrounding the city and attempting to control access. Other reports talk of large concentrations of tanks & military vehicles in the city.

This report smacks of classic propaganda but as we all know ... Marlowe as a commentator here, hasn't even got the least ability to evaluate what he tries to consume. He reads it fleetingly - if it looks good reguritates it on us.
