the vile ungrateful foe
One group of Iraqi boys on the side of the road smiled and waved as a convoy of British tanks and trucks rolled by.
But once it had passed, leaving a trail of dust and grit in its wake, their smiles turned to scowls.
"We don't want them here," said 17-year-old Fouad, looking angrily up at the plumes of gray smoke rising from Basra.
He pulled a piece of paper from the waistband of his trousers. Unfolding it, he held up a picture of Saddam, showing the Iraqi leader sitting on a throne with a benign smile.
"Saddam is our leader," he said defiantly. "Saddam is good."
Don't these heathen savages understand that we're there to bring them peace and enlightenment?

What country's web site was that item in
It was a Reuters dispatch (bylined Luke Baker and Rosalind Russell, who no doubt endures a lot of stale japery), which would put it in the Anglo-American quadrant of cyberspace.
As to email--my bad: it was languishing uncompleted among my drafts; just now fished out, hastily completed and its constituent packets flung across the briny sea.

Re: who do 17yo worship here? eminem whaddya expect?
Hmmm...good point. Brings to mind an issue of hypocrisy: a guess at my age range is couched (multiple times) in a way that suggests young people are unqualified to have a reasonable opinion on politics. Yet a single 17-year-old's opinion is viewed as representative of an entire nation, simply because it fits what certain people want to hear. Even if it goes against a majority of accounts to the contrary.
BTW I'm nowhere near 17...above not below, you jokers. ;-)

ya well, some of us are convinced marlowe is
a public school history teacher due to his lack of knowledge of history, and another wag has suggested you might be one of his students. :-) The things you are convinced of at 20 are quite different events at 40. thanx, bill

It's not representative.
But link that with the other stories about Iraqi troops fighting against overwhelming US force.
Then look at Afghanistan. Today.
That will be Iraq in a year.
And kids like that will be the "Freedom Fighters".
Rather than being so blind and dismissive, understand why he believes what he does.

So what--their 17 year-olds will dry-gulch our 19 year-olds at first opportunity. it's going to make for a long, bleak occupation. Incidentally, I have found condescending to the young to be one of the one of the profounder unexpected consolations of middle age.
