New By all means replace X
With what?

X is like democracy. It sucks, but everything else sucks more.

New With what?
Hey, I don't know, I'm a marketing guy, not a programmer. I'm just saying Linux has some marketing problems, X being one of them. Presuming marketing problems are inconsequential has killed more superior technology than all other causes combined.

[link|http://www.fresco.org|Fresco] (formerly Berlin) looks interesting, but is also a bit far from the hardware. Surely there must be others working on other projects.

New There might be others.
The [link|http://www.gnustep.org/|GNUStep] mob have Display GhostScript. I can't tell if this is supposed to replace X or run on top of it, though. Some pages suggest it will, others show X as part of the structure.

The [link|http://www.ggi-project.org/|GGI Project] is still trundling along, too. I'm not sure what they wanted to do to X, but I think it was "replace most of it".

Is it enough to love
Is it enough to breathe
Somebody rip my heart out
And leave me here to bleed

Is it enough to die
Somebody save my life
I'd rather be Anything but Ordinary
Please

New Fresco uses GGI . .
. . so there's obviously some cross development going on. Fresco says they currenly use X, but want eventually to replace it entirely and run X applications in a Fresco window.

New Aqua is pretty nice, no X allowed here

New Re: By all means replace X
Maybe they can port the Amiga Workbench, or the OS/2 Desktop? Something, as long as it works and can support X applications.\r\n\r\nGNUStep runs under X as far as I know, all it does is offer some OpenStep API calls, etc.
