DCOM/COM+ became DotNet, Visual BASIC because more of a mutated C++ in VB.NET, and as soon as we learn one tech, someone will invent something better.
Soon to come out:
Windows 2003 Server
Visual Studio.NET 2003
MS-Office 2003
SQL Server 2003
Stuff I won't get the chance to learn because I cannot afford to buy it. I'll have to take classes and use them in college. Either that, or go totally open sourced with products I can download for free and then hope that an employer will use them. So far St. Louis is mostly a Microsoft shop going the DotNet way. People are already claiming years of Dotnet experience and it hasn't been out for a year or two yet.
Soon the 64 bit systems will be upon us, if they haven't yet already came out. Then the 64 bit OS, and 64 bit Applications, etc.
The technology keeps on changing, either you adapt to new technology, or you get left behind. Then you hope that some employers out there are still using the old stuff, mostly they are because they want to save money and offer lower paying jobs. The ones with the big bucks are mostly moving to the new technologies.
Quit if you want to, that is your option. I'm doing what I can to learn new things. I might just go off of disability some day. Before that day happens, I want to get in some more college and computer training courses. So I'll have the better degrees and certifications than I have now.
A relative of mine, from the east cost, who is a teacher, once told me to "never stop learning."
