New Hijacking in general
I touched on this in the news forum in one of my posts, but have not addressed it directly. Looking around at some of the stupid new security regulations... it's almost as if they're unnecessary now anyway.

Has the face of hijacking been changed forever?

The next time some fanatic waves a knife and claims to have a bomb, or waves a gun around, with the knowledge of the World Trade Center ramming attack rattling around in your head - who in their right mind is going to sit still and meekly accept their fate? I'll take a bullet before I sit by and let them try another airplane ramming, even if it's some two-bit puddle jumper commuter flight.
That no man should scruple, or hesitate a moment to use arms in defense of so valuable a blessing [as freedom], on which all the good and evil of life depends, is clearly my opinion; yet arms ... should be the last resource. - George Washington
New It's now an act of war
...or should be.

If the assumption is that a hijacking creates a military threat to national security, then the focus becomes neutralizing the threat, not minimizing hostages. This means that if the flight crew / passengers can't subdue the hijackers, the plane wil be shot down. At least if it's over any potential target. That gives a good several thousand miles of the US that aren't too critical, but in general, it's going to be a lot tougher to get a free ride.

What part of "gestalt" don't you understand?
New Yep.
I just flew back from my vacation in Alaska. 4 flight segments: Fairbanks to Anchorage to Salt Lake City to Cincinnati to Charlotte. The Delta pilot on the Anchorage to Salt Lake City segment said to us "Crew and passengers, we are all on the team. If the flight attendant is in trouble, help her!".
