Get the new eCS Maintenance Tool
and use that.
I'd suggest updating any drivers that are suggested by the fixtool, and then applying fixpack 3. You'll probably then want to install the latest tcpip stack (4.32) and then any hotfixes that have been released for it. Also, check out the latest kernel on the site; there was a problem with some systems with more than 512 MB RAM that was fixed by a kernel release; it doesn't sound like it's your problem, but it's worth a shot unless you know that one of the DIMMs is defective.
The latest version of the eCS Maintenance Tool is version 1.12, released on the 30th January. It will proffer a complete list of all fixes available at the eComStation.com website. You can use it to apply all of the fixes available.
I'd install it on a drive with a fair bit of spare space on it, unless you want to tell it to redirect the downloads to a separate drive.
When you first fire it up, it'll ask you which drive it should update, and list all the bootable partitions that seem to have eCS on it. Before selecting the drive, take a quick tour through the "Tools" menu item, which will let you configure the fixtool.
After you've got that all set up, select your boot drive and click on OK. Take a troll through the "Downloads" menu item to have it download any updates you might want; it will present you with a complete list of what's available on the ftp site after you've configured the fix client. Do that by selecting "Status" from the menu, and filling in your website userid and password, and clicking the "Retrieve FTP Logon" button. Close it up, and it should be ready to go. Select the fixes you want from the list. It will download them to the download directory you specified from the Tools menu, and unzip them to the fix directory you sepecified from the Tools menu. After that, use the items in the Updates menu to actually apply the updates.
After you take a look at it, report back and say what you think; I know that Chuck McInnes has put a LOT of work into making the tool as good as he can. If you haven't seen it before, I would really like to see what you have to say about it. I'm sure that any feedback you could give would be useful in terms of improving the tool.

I hadn't updated my system in a long time, it ran fine so I didn't worry about it. I'll let ya know what I think about the update tool.
I'm positive it was a bad DIMM - I removed one DIMM and the problem remained. Put it back in and removed the other DIMM and the problem cleared up. I'll probably put the new kernel in anyway since I'll have 1GB once I exchange the defective one.

dunno what I did, but late last night I hosed up the system. Last thing I did was the MPTS update and now the system won't boot.
At least the install takes less than 6 minutes now.
I've been taking (lots of)notes and will give a full report once I've got everything going again. Short summary - nice but confusing.

doesn't even respond to C-A-D.
I already wiped the drive and reinstalled before I went to bed. I'm going to install the updates tonight to see if I can recreate the problem.

Did you get to the boot blob? Alt-F2 can also be very handy.

I did the reinstall w/out thinking about alt-F2, that's what I get for staying up too late and working on the computer when I should have been in bed.
I used alt-F2 last week when trying to figure out the problems with the new motherboard's built-in NIC.

TCP/IP 4.32 install consistantly fails
intall gets to 73% with the status bar showing "Updating: C:\\AUTOEXEC.BAT". I get a beep and the Netscape window locks up. I let the system sit a while(5 minutes) and eventually killed the TCP/IP installation task. The eCS Maintenance Tool continued as if the installation was successful and installed the Dialog Enhancer updates for TCP/IP 4.3x. Prior to install TCP/IP I installed - Base Device Drivers Fixpack 3
- Convenience Package FixPak 3
- kernel 14.093d_w4
- MPTS LAPS 4.32
- MPTS LAPS 4.3x fixpack WR08707
System seems to be running, I can get to the internet, but I wonder if the state the system's been left in could cause problems later. Darrell Spice, Jr.

Well, better tcpip than mpts.
Still, that doesn't sound good. I have no idea why that would be happening to you at all; that install routine's IBM authored, and all I can say is that it worked here.
It won't affect any "third party" programs you have, like moz or netscape; they only interact with mpts. It's mostly a question of whether you have a complete set of tcpip apps installed or not.
Can you see if it left some kind of a log?
Do you want me to email you a file listing of my \\tcpip\\ folder, to compare with yours?

might it be Netscape version? I use Mozilla so whatever version was installed by default is what's there - (checking) - Communicator 4.61 TCP/IP functions seem to work - command line ping, ftp, telnet. Checking the TCPIP folders I see: - BIN - most files dated 9-17-01. A few *.cmd files(admin_pw.cmd, binlscpc.cmd, binlscps.cmd and others) are 3-18-03
- DLL - all are 9-17-01
- and so on for the rest.

eCS Maint Tool comments
first off - slick - like it a lot better than the old way of dealing with updates. Initial thoughts - confusing. Setup wasn't intuitive, update flow was odd. I'd consider setting this up using a tabbed interface with the following tabs: - Available Downloads
show only those items you haven't yet downloaded. If you don't have access to it(ie: no upgrade protection), don't show it. Be better than the "download failed"
- Update Status
show downloaded updates and status - installed, ready to install, or has prerequisite(ie: to install TCP/IP 4.32 you need to first install MPTS 4.32) For updates that will auto-install other updates, show the other updates grouped with it(ie: all those various device drivers that get installed after base device drivers fixpak 3.). I wasted time installing updates that were reinstalled later.
- Config
User logon info
First run I'd show the Config Tab. From then on always start at Availabe Downloads. The SciTech Display Doctor downloaded successfully, but does not show up on the update selection list. JFS update was applied, but the Applied Date was not updated. Did you apply the jfs update before or after fixpack 3? The JFS update is older than the JFS in fixpack 3; otoh, some people claim it's better.
Hence our efforts on the 1.1 installer:)
