The Soviets were trying to create an Islamic buffer (recall that the USSR-Afghan War was on the heels of the Iranian hostage crisis). But no, our geniuses in charge at the time adopted the "enemy of my enemy is my friend" attitude and now Osama gets a safe place to hide, and plot killing more Americans.
