Human shield update

Excerpt:
'I am ashamed to be leaving you at this time of need, but I'm going out of pure, cold fear," Godfrey Meynell, 68, told the two Iraqi factory workers standing before him. His white hair was, as always, unbrushed; his navy windcheater zipped up to the chin. "This power plant is next to a bridge, surrounded by Republican Guard," he continued. "It's obviously a prime target." The men, who understood this fear too well, returned his handshake and thanked him warmly.
As he heaved his rucksack into the taxi, Mr Meynell, a former Colonial Office civil servant, was tearful. He was not, however, the only "human shield" fleeing Baghdad yesterday in a state of high emotion. Nine of the 11 British shields on the pioneering wave of red double-deckers left this weekend. At the Andalus hotel five kilometres away, Dr Abdul Hashimi, the official overseeing their mission in Iraq, had issued the shocked group with an ultimatum: deploy to the "strategic sites" hand-picked by the government or leave immediately.
It was a chilling twist in the saga of the human shields' mission to stop a war in Iraq. It was also inevitable. I accompanied the first wave of shields throughout their 3,500 mile, three-week journey aboard three double-decker buses from Europe to Baghdad and remained with them while they battled unsuccessfully with Iraqi officials to be allowed access to the civilians most thought they had come to protect.
The eccentric, eclectic group, none of whom fitted the "peacenik" stereotype, may have been drawn from all ages, backgrounds and experience, but they all shared one trait: naivety. Beset by problems on the road, lack of sufficient funds or a clear, universally-shared agenda, most had been tested beyond their limits before they even arrived in Iraq.

There's one staying

Excerpt:
Former Big Brother contestant Gordon Sloan last night said he was determined to stay on in Iraq as a human shield, despite some volunteers leaving.
"You find people are here for their own agendas but, if you are getting nervous now when there's no soldiers with their fingers on the triggers, I'm not sure why you came really," he said, referring to the departure of some British peace activists who, according to Britain's Daily Telegraph lasted seven days as human shields at a power station.
I say:
Some people die for good causes, and some people die because they're farking idiots.
Well, at least he's not a coward.

It must really pain you, not to be with 'our boys'
instead of behind the Nintendo, adreamin of all that glory.. you only get to watch on the nightly body count. Let's see.. Gooks has been used - wonder what colorfully dehumanizing new epithets will be spawned next, by the armchair chicken-hawks.
(Better double the dose on the meds soon though; you're beginning to salivate as that Excitement fix builds)

So when are you heading to Iraq?
You'd make a great human shield. Unless you're chicken.

What was your rank again?
I'm sorry, I forgot. Others can die for your beliefs, not you.

Grain of salt time, but interesting nonetheless.

Treason = War crimes?
What was it she did? My memories of it had her protesting the war by posing for pictures in N. Vietnam. Was she aiding and abetting the enemy? I suppose you could spin it that way. Just like some are doing now by accusing protesters of treason.
War crimes is a different matter. An absurd stretch that isn't going to cut it.

The worst she did.....
was "aiding" their anti-US propaganda.
She was filmed sitting in one of their anti-aircraft guns.
A really stupid thing to do, but she's an actress. And there seem to be only two or so people here who think that actors'/actresses' opinions are worth anything.
If anything, she was guilty of low-grade treason for "aiding" their propaganda.
"War crimes" are things like genocide, murder, rape and so forth.
But if our current regime wants to define something as a "war crime", they just have to get that definition through Congress and the Judges.
Which does not appear that difficult to do now.

a link to what she did(and didnt) do
[link|http://www.snopes.com/military/fonda.htm|http://www.snopes.com/military/fonda.htm] appears to get the lies straight from the actual facts. Tokyo Rose was charged and convicted of treason for similar acts. I think Jane got a pass because of her name, but on the other hand, without her name it wouldnt have been useful to the NVA. thanx, bill

Thanks for source.
You can spin it as treason if you want to. Others can spin it as misguided protest. But charges were never brought and, according to Beep's definition, since she wasn't convicted, she did nothing wrong.

I think a case could be made for "treason".
But I have not seen anything that would qualify as "war crime".
And, as for "treason", the same could be said for just about anyone protesting any war (or possible war). As long as the "enemy" gets it on camera and can "use" it in their propaganda.
But we've already passed that point.
Our own government has told us that we'd better watch what we way.

Here we go again.
This is the part where the "intellectuals" will start crying and whining about you lying and misrepresenting...yadda yadda.
If you would like to continue misrepresenting my opinion based upon your complete lack of knowledge regarding the law...please feel free.
It is...however...tiresome at best.

Sorry, forgot to add the "nudge"
Even though I am still pissed at you for calling me a liar because my opinion of the law doesn't agree with your opinion of it. Since neither of us are experts in this field, I decided to let it go, reluctantly. I'll still twig you on it though.

Apologies.
Not really calling >you< anything...as I think you know. Thats more of a statement on the truly sad methods that some (not you) have used to avoid honest debate.
We can agree to disagree on legality if you want (as long as I still know I'm right :-))...
And I probably should have included my own nudge as well.

Actually I always considered the Tokyo Rose
charges to be unjust.
Any investigation into how the Japanese treated their prisoners of war and it becomes readily apparent that if she had not complied with their wishes she would've ended up dead or worse.
