The U.S. troops vote by Turkey's parliament Saturday has been declared null, and the issue must now face a second vote -- which is expected to be rescheduled.
Doubt quickly clouded initial news that the Turkish parliament had approved on Saturday the measure, allowing the United States to deploy some 62,000 troops on Turkish soil in preparation for a possible war with Iraq.
The vote was 264 in favor, 251 against, and 19 abstaining. With 534 ministers present, a "yes" vote of 268 was needed, according to the opposition.
They don't explain why and 268 is a rather odd total. With 534 ministers, 269 would be half, so I don't see how they get needing 268.
It's another case of the government being pro-war despite 90% of the population being antiwar. It wouldn't surprise me if this goes against allowing troops now. Those opposed to the war will gain strength from this close vote and some that voted yes only because they thought it was a forgone conclusion are liable to vote no now.
