I always create on a machine I care about a /dskchg partition to copy meaningful things I might need to recover a horked disk. Doesnt cure the problem but gives a list of non vanilla changes to the system.

New Yep... I do the same ...
Actually during this WHOLE shebang... I took a "snapshot" copy of the LV... but I deleted it after the first restore... cause I was sure I had it right...
