I haven't tried the Novell client.
[link|http://freshmeat.net/projects/now-well/?topic_id=150|freshmeat]
And you have to have your kernel compiled with ncpfs enabled.
[link|http://systemhaus.gkdmedien.de/mars_nwe/|NetWare emulator]
If you just want to connect to a NetWare box then check out ncpfs at the debian site.
I haven't tried the newer versions that connect to NDS, but they worked fine as bindery connections.

No... I think he is talking about...
Direct access... I haven't yet used Knoppix in that way yet, but the partition types are:
Novell Netware b8 Novell Netware bb
But as of yet, I don't think linux "knows" about TFS... I definatey KNOW it DOES not know about NSS... Good luck.
The NCP support in Linux is VERY good... it work in Bindery and NDS... but only if the Server has an NDS Replica on it...
At the College... I actually RO mounted a volume for the Web-Root of a webserver.
As for the Emulators, MARS is superb, I have ANCIENT ipx.com and net3.com clients as well as WindowsXP connecting to it... and they all believe it's a NW3.11 machine. Login script and all...
But I also have Samba sharing the same directories and such... it works well period.

Correct, direct access, no dice
At [link|http://www.tldp.org/|the Linux Documentation\r\nProject], the Filesystem HOWTO discusses direct access to Novell\r\npartitions, but the support appears to be fairly experimental, though\r\nthere do appear to be drivers if you want to build in support. I think\r\nBox's reference may have landed in or around the same spot. \r\n\r\n There are apparently three flavors Novell filesystem to deal with:\r\nnwfs '286, nwfs '386, and nss. The first two, particularly 386, seem to\r\nbe supported to some extent. \r\n\r\n The issue is a server with several Novell partitions from which data\r\nrecovery may have been possible, hence: booting GNU/Linux on it.\r\nKnoppix by itself doesn't have the necessary drivres, I may look at a\r\nfew other bootable distros. \r\n

Actually three flavors fo NSS...
...There is the NW5.0pre-sp3a version... unpatched is a nightmare. Then there is the NW5.0-sp3a+ to NW5.1pre-sp2... and the NW5.1sp2+ => NW6.x so far...
There were significant changes making it even harder to get linux to understand them...
Granted the changes were definately for the Better... REALLY for the better... but dang.
BTW, the current version shipping can be applied to all versions 5.0+ that understand or have support for NSS. NW4.x would have problems understanding NSS as alot of the code isn;t compatible with the NW4.x core... as they wrapped the core for 5.0 and slowly changed and migrated it...
I doubt... unless some miracle happens... that NSS will ever be fully supported by Linux. Although, that miracle may come into being someday... as that company is starting to show extensive liking of OSS and Linux in general.

We are talking about direct access not over the Wire...
I am guessing Karsten has a machine that has Netware partitions on them. The NW is not bootable to get the files off... from the network.
He is looking at using Linux to grab the files and such directly off the machine. The stuff TRG did was for the TFS files system... NSS is a real bugger.
So far even companies that have access to the NSS code, are having difficulty getting thier proucts to work well... It does work though, just not as well as it should... On-Track is one of the few that really understand it... amongst others.

Captain Nemo, if you have a Windows box.
I've used that to recover info from NetWare drives (not NSS) before.

What I guess I am doing...
...is not communicating properly...
I realize you can do alternate things to get TFS files off of dead machines, but NSS is still just too new...
ON-Track does have utilities to do it... but you knew that already...
Oh well. Back to my droll(sp?) existance(sp?)

There are rumors . .
. . that Novell will issue it's own brand of Linux.
What makes sense to me is that they buy SCO Group (Caldera), which is just down the street, and already has a number of Novell technologies implemented. The price should be pretty attractive right now, and Ray Noorda has a strong financial interest in both companies.
If I were running Novell, I'd certainly be giving that a good hard look right now.

Ah... but remember...
Caldera was a spin-off of Novell... mainly due to the DR-DOS lawsuit... against M$... now since they bought BOTH sides of the AT&T UNIX branches... they are prime for 1 of 2 things to happen. Die a slow and painful... taking others down with them process... or get bought by a company that has a motive... Those 3 Companies that would be seriously interested would be Novell (of Course), Sun (for Obvious Reasons) and Microsoft... for yet another obvious reason... and other not-so obvious reasons...
I can see, Microsoft out bidding either company or doing a hostile... mainly to crush the *NIX world... going over IP with a REALLY fine toothed comb and litigating the likes of SUN, HPQ, SGI...etc... into oblivion... or forcing License fees at an astrnomical rate... either way...
They are still in Hunter-Killer mode... even though they got slapped down a bit... I see another Anti-Trust Trial down the street and around the next corner... probably 5-7 years from now... with a similar result...
Bah... Anti-Trust will never work against M$... too much money and too many lawyers... adn too much Greed...

Along those lines, Cringely says Sony should buy Sun.
Last week - [link|http://www.pbs.org/cringely/pulpit/pulpit20030213.html|Sunset].
Following his reasoning, I don't think Sun would be interested in Caldera. Novell might, but they might be too small to have much of an impact. Maybe Sony should buy all three and then let their record-company division's IP lawyers loose on everyone. Yikes!
Cheers, Scott.
