Welcome to IWETHEY!

New Venting
Got a W2K Active directory setup.
Got a REAL windows person.
Teaches the courses at the college type.
Loves his windows

Got a Domain Controller replication problem.

There is a problem.

Somewhere.

Certain people are constantly locked out.

The Unix people.

The people who use smbclient.

The Windows guru points and clicks for a while,
exploring a lot. Unlocks the account.
And then it locks in about 20 minutes.

He goes through all the Controllers, doing "stuff".

And I try again, and again.

We setup a Linux samba setup just for me, for now,
to allow me to move some files around. And my W2K
client PC refuses to map the drive to it, since I'm
CURRENTLY LOCKED OUT OF AD. If I logged in local
to set it up, I could not access the rest of the
worlds.

pointy clicky point clicky -> SMACK!
New Take a chisel and make your own vent
sounds like it is not a wins issue,
AD times out after 20 minutes
sounds like some aging issue. Is there any polling involved?

New Re: Take a chisel and make your own vent

If you can't reach a DC, you can't authenticate. (Well, that's not *strictly* true. You might be able to get somewhere with locally cached credentials).

DNS, DNS, DNS. First port of call when problems occur.

WINS is irrelevant in an all-W2K environment.
AD times out after 20 minutes

Horrendously vague. What do you actually mean here? Do you mean sessions to a server time out after 20 minutes? Well, they don't. My little Samba box at work is merrily connected to the fileserver (via SMBFS) for weeks at a time.

Aging of what? Passwords? You'd be prompted to change it. Polling? I don't understand.

Then Barry needs to frame that correctly - you'll never get an error message that says "Active Directory has timed out your foo".

As it stands, "Active Directory timed out" is a meaningless statement.

New See if your REAL WIndoze...
...Person can allow the Samba Server to become a DOMAIN Member... That should help you out tremendously...

Plus, eventually the Samba server will become the browse master anyway... Per one of my previous posts here... I gave us an interseting look into things to do just that...

Maybe you might get some insight as to why it's happeneing... might even fix your STEENKEEN Replication Problems... :)

New Samba as Browse master
Don't bother. Set it to always lose the elections.

Set security=domain, too. Use net join to join the box to the domain.

HTH.

New The REAL problem
Home PC was trying to login to check for mail using the Outlook web interface. It checks for new mail every minute or so.

If it has the password wrong (changed, typoed, I dunno), the login fails.

Fail enough times, trigger the lockout.

Every 15 minutes.
