"The winner is the one who, at the end of the show, doesn't blow his brains out. He gets a new refridgerator."
That is the line that, for me, sums up the ENTIRE movie.
For everyone else, the guy who created "The Dating Game" and "The Newlywed Game" and "The Gong Show" was recruited by a (maybe CIA?) spook and trained to kill a as freelance assassin. (This was right after he had finished the pilot of "The Dating Game" but couldn't get anyone to air it.)
The rest of the movie traces his life between successful shows and successful murders.
Until the pressure of both start eating his mind.
Not to mention the standard Hollywood personal relationship problems.
Accented by the fact that you don't know if someone is trying to kill you.
Then someone starts killing the killers. The other people he's met on past jobs start to die. Is it suicide?
Then he crashes and ends up watching TV, standing up, naked, while he re-evaluates his life. Is he a nothing? A nobody? Did he contribute anything to the world?
Meanwhile, there's still one woman who loves him.
But she doesn't know anything about the spook stuff.
And he's hurt her a lot in the past.
I highly recommend it and I'm buying the DVD as soon as it comes out and inflicting it upon everyone who hasn't seen it yet. :)
