So who else went to a peace demonstration this weekend?
I went to the NYC one.
Suffice it to say that the official numbers didn't match what was being talked about in the crowd as reported by local media. And one thing that everyone there agreed on was that it would have been much better attended if it hadn't been mid-20's out there...
Oh, and the police barricades were highly annoying. As well the woman that I saw arrested didn't seem to deserve it.
My vote for best sign? Dropping bombs for peace is like f*cking for virginity Followed by, No more Bushit!
Cheers, Ben
PS I also hadn't seen [link|http://uk.news.yahoo.com/030208/80/dsrm1.html|http://uk.news.yahoo...208/80/dsrm1.html] until I saw that picture on a sign. That took dedication. (Look closely to see why...)
PPS The link above seems to have stopped working. Scroll down [link|http://abcnews.go.com/sections/us/DailyNews/homefront030207.html|http://abcnews.go.co...efront030207.html] to the picture. The vanished link was a larger version of that without the text. In the small version it isn't utterly obvious that the women are lying directly in the snow without even a stitch of clothing on them...

Remember? - it's in that Constitution thingie, before recent revisions anyway.
Hawkies can march in their Sharper Image camos too - last time I checked with Homeland Securitat. As to Who Is Sure What Is Best -?- non sequitur.
Dumb post, Box. I mean, just because folks waited Too Long re the *last* Vietnam...

please re-read my post
It applauded the protests because it makes those in charge look longer and harder at what they plan than a cheering crowd of wellwishers would. thanx, bill

Not that well behaved in NYC
[link|http://www.ccmep.org/2003_articles/Iraq/021503_311_arrested.htm|http://www.ccmep.org..._311_arrested.htm]
Though the main complaint that most had was how they made it difficult to get to the protest, and once you were there how they made it hard to actually get to the main protest.
I'm fairly sure that their reasoning was that if something started to happen, they wanted to limit it to a fairly contained group of people, and prevent others from joining in. And at the end at least one group did break off on an inpromptu march to Times Square. While hundreds did that, a substantial fraction of the protest (several blocks that I saw - dunno how many thousand that is) were still in holding pens. I bet that they would have had a much bigger impromptu march were it not for those holding pens...
Cheers, Ben

Your link has evaporated.
But from [link|http://www.alternet.org/story.html?StoryID=15196|this one], which may do the same, there are few other creative signs:

Saw that on a bridge this morning.
With crowds that large it's not surprising there are so many good witticisms.

Got sick.
Susan + I both came down with something nasty - if the weather had been more cooperative, we would have been there, but at that point we were both worried about coming down with pneumonia if we went. Too bad - might have actually run into the elusive Brandioch if we had...

Serious possibility here in Seattle.
It's not like the police haven't overreacted here before...

Ditto
I've been battling respiratory infection for almost 2 weeks. Today is the first day I've felt like getting out of the house in awhile. Wish I had gone to the Paris one. Heard there was a whole US expat assembly. The protest was something like 6 times bigger than expected. Which is amazing. Parisians are constantly protesting something or other. Strikes by various employees (metro workers being the most inconvenient) happen often.
I think that it's extraordinarily important that we in computer science keep fun in computing. When it started out, it was an awful lot of fun. Of course, the paying customer got shafted every now and then, and after a while we began to take their complaints seriously. We began to feel as if we really were responsible for the successful, error-free perfect use of these machines. I don't think we are. I think we're responsible for stretching them, setting them off in new directions, and keeping fun in the house. I hope the field of computer science never loses its sense of fun. Above all, I hope we don't become missionaries. Don't feel as if you're Bible salesmen. The world has too many of those already. What you know about computing other people will learn. Don't feel as if the key to successful computing is only in your hands. What's in your hands, I think and hope, is intelligence: the ability to see the machine as more than when you were first led up to it, that you can make it more.
