With libya in charge of human rights and Iraq in charge of
disarmanent it is becoming somewhat of a farce, why bother showing up? During the cold war the UN had a reference point of balance between Aligned and Unaligned nation blocks. Since the Breakup of the eastern block it appears to be a only a platform for attacking the US and Israel. thanx, bill

We should walk.
Out of the UN, Germany,NATO, etc.
The UN having Libya in charge of Human Rights and Iraq in charge of disarmament...and we're to take this organization >seriously<???
Whether we attack Iraq or not...we should endeavor to leave the UN. .I don't think tying foreign policy to that anchor makes any sense at all.

not walk, keep your enemies where you can see them
with your friends all in the same place. Veto everything, pull all UN Peacekeepers out unless paid for by other countries on a contractual basis. Remove diplomatic priviliges for all UN attaches, only those acredited to embassies in the US to retain them and the actual designated UN principals, no staff. Enforce all laws that are currently broken by these people. Tow their cars. Arrest them for speeding, make their lives as miserable as they would have it in their home countries. Any major offences deport their ass. Ensure their peccadilloes are well publiced in their home countries.etc. thanx, bill

Yup. "Petulance".
I said: Now is the time for certain individuals to start crying about taking our ball and going home (read: leaving NATO and the UN and such). Veto everything,... Yes, a very mature response. Most enlightened and thoughtful. Not at all like a spoiled, petulant child.

Where we can see them?
So we should plant bugs in the UN building? Seems almost... cold war-ish. Or maybe passive-aggressive.
It's gonna be hard to take away diplomatic privilege and keep up the pretense of diplomatic relations at the same time.
I don't like backstabbing. That's stooping to their level. I'd rather we stab them in the front. Repeatedly, and with gusto. If we pull out of the UN, that neutralizes their power. The UN is nothing without our backing, and nothing good with. From then on, we treat them with open contempt.
Say, can we legally evict them from that nice real estate on the East Side?

Of course I only know your side of that story...
but if you are to be believed, she must have been a very wise and perceptive woman. Ahead of her time in many ways.
In 1950, the present lay ahead. Most people saw personal jetpacks, vacations on the moon, and lunch in pill form. A few saw a titanic battle between civilization and nihilistic horror. In other words, a continuation of history as it had always been.
Poor Francis Fukuyama. He really got carried away with himself.
I'm gonna pick up That Hideous Strength again. I think it might be worth finishing. Right after I finish this book on the Scottish enlightenment. So much better than the French version.
No, I'm not giving the Bhagavad Gita another shot anytime soon. Too many of the people who take one seriously are themselves utterly silly. And - more to the point - too few of them are otherwise. Makes one wonder.

Listened to the album yesterday; I like it
Even though saying that draws tongue-clucking from most people I know.

Sure, let's just torpedo the Last Hope of post-adolescent
international behaviour: and elect selves Military-enforced Arbiter of All which develops next, anywhere in the world.
Great. Is that a 'Libertarian' plank or just organized solipsism, Beep? (And ya sure as hell can't blame such a POV on Jesus, either)
Is it silly or just Cosmic irony - those two "random rotating" appointments? You'd prefer that We make all the important selections.. ad hoc. Or not play at all - izzat it?
(BTW last I heard, and despite suffering under the yoke of the kinda guy we used to prop up in several hemispheres, over past decades: I understand that Iraq has some pretty good educational institutions -- these 'Iraqis' on those committees could very well speak better Engrish than the Leader of our coup d'etat! Or the Popular Mr. GOP-Lott, til he spilled the beans, once too often.)
Never mind.

They can't be educated too good.
Not if they don't know that we are better than them.
And that our plans be better than their's.

Well...lesse now...
...would you mind counting how many current resolutions, all regarding disarmament, are currently being violated by the state taking charge?
Libya I can at least wink at...since they seem to have made at least an attempt at coming into the world as a good citizen.
But Iraq..in this environment...in charge of disarmament. I, quite frankly, wouldn't care if each member of their delegation had a dozen PHDs each on the subject. The status of their country should disqualify their leadership.
Hussein is winning..because he knows that as long as it takes 100% agreement at the SC level...he will remain allowed to play games with the inspectors and continue to win the PR game.
Iraq has been violating resolutions for 12 years. You can certainly play all of you semantic games with the last one...but that doesn't change the fact that for 12 years the UN has been played the fool. And its continuing.
France, Germany and Russia are in it for the money. The longer Hussein stays in power...the longer they get exclusives in breaking the trade embargoes. Public opinion is irrelevent to them.
