New Microsoft Office/File defragmentation speedup?
Anybody remember this?

I remember reading *something* about an Intel-based defragmenter that was packaged with Windows 95, that would in theory speed up the load time of Office 95 by ordering the files such that they would be loaded in the optimal order, or some such nonsense.

This ring a bell with anybody?

New I thought it was, something like that is built into Win XP?
New Re: I thought it was, something like that is built into Win
Yah, I'm just remembering some marketspeak from back then - that instead of just "defragmenting" files, it "sniffed" the order in which files were being loaded, and somehow optomized the position of the files for optimal load times. Coulda been marketdroid speak for "defragmenting" - I'm just kinda curious what it was.

I admit, I was a lot more susceptible to marketdroid speak back in those days...

New Norton SpeedStart
I think is what it's called. MS licensed/stole it for XP, I think. It puts certain Win files in faster parts of the disk so the system starts up quicker, as I understand it.

Cheers,
Scott.
New WinAlign (and walign)?

New Yes, this was advertised at the time.
It was supposed to happen automagically (with Win98, I think) and was just part of Windows, but I don't know how well it worked, or if it worked at all. Haven't heard a word about it since the original release, so maybe it didn't.

New I see it on my laptop
on the 98 partition.

The Disk Defrager's "select drive" dialog box has a logo "Intel Optimizers" along with the text "Intel Application Launch Accelerator".

The settings screen has the pre-checked option to "Rearrange program files so my programs start faster."

It is an enhanced ATA driver.
