Well, I am well aware of the low value that many legislators place on email. Nevertheless, Mr. Hollings has a [link|http://hollings.senate.gov/webform.html|convenient web form,] so I thought I might quickly and conveniently inform him of my opinion, pending communication via the U.S. Mail.

I entered the following, along with my complete and accurate personal contact information:

RE: the proposed Security Systems Standards and Certification Act

I am seriously concerned that the act would over-regulate the technology industry. There are many interactive devices for which DRM (Digital Rights Management) technology is neither applicable nor appropriate. And for those where it is appropriate, the regulations would stifle, if not criminalize, innovation.

And then I clicked the Submit button, and was greeted with a page that said, in H2 form, and I quote the page in its entirity hoping that this is a case where political discourse expands the idea of fair use to the logical maximum:

Senator Stevens also has a web site, at [link|http://stevens.senate.gov/|http://stevens.senate.gov/] , but when I went there, my system began to thrash in a manner that suggests a Java applet was involved. And I don't feel like having my system crash right now, so I cancelled my excursion there.
