New SCO going after Linux?
[link|http://www.infoworld.com/article/03/02/11/HNsco_1.html|Has SCO fired shot to start Linux war?]

"On January 22, SCO made headlines with its announcement that it had hired firecracker attorney David Boies and his law firm to protect its Unix intellectual property from possible violations, particularly from Linux developers.
...
Because SCO's intentions are unclear, experts can't predict whether the company will prevail or fail in court, should it get litigious. But most agree that the Linux community had better get ready for a significant increase in legal challenges similar to the ones SCO may unleash. "

New InfoWorld is 2 weeks late and did no research.
This whole thing was kicked off by a Linux newletter that restated information from an internal SCO memo in the worst possible terms. It snowballed from there. pretty much devoid of any facts or substance. A very vocal contingent in the community want SCO dead, soner rather than later, because former CEO Ransom Love pissed them off with his choice of words. Most of the responses InfoWorld quotes were issued before any facts were available.

There's only one substantial item in this whole thing - SCO has a library that allows Software written to run on SCO Unix to run on Linux. If you don't want to run software written for SCO Unix on Linux without recoding, you have no need for the libraries. They are not included in any known Linux distribution.

These are recent libraries and are recent, so are valid intellectual property.

SCO stated they are offering these libraries at $149 / server to integrators who wish to use them. IBM, mentioned in many articles as sure to countersue SCO into oblivion over this issue, is a mojor Linux integrator, so a likely customer, and will certainly pay the modest fees if they use the libraries. IBM has a great respect for intellectual property.

SCO has stated they do not know of any infringement of their intellectual property within Linux itself, and as a significant Linux publisher, they ought to be aware of it if there were any.

I have a phone that doesn't ring, a line that doesn't sting, a letter never sent... I have a dream where snowflakes fall inside a painted hall... HA! THAT DON'T PAY THE RENT!
