Excerpt:

WASHINGTON (AP)--The White House on Friday endorsed a French-brokered accord to end the Ivory Coast's 4-month-old civil war, even as the peace deal sparked massive rioting in the former West African colony.

``The United States welcomes the signing of the Marcoussis accord by all parties involved in the Cote d'Ivoire conflict,'' read a written statement issued by the press secretary's office. ``We believe that the accord must be implemented without delay to bring an end to the violence in Cote d'Ivoire.''

In Abidjan, Ivory Coast, a stone-throwing mob of 5,000 invaded the nation's main airport Friday, storming planes on the tarmac and taunting, slapping and spitting at terrorized French families.

I say:

A great opportunity to help some oppressed people - and to enhance our own prestige at the expense of France - has just been squandered. I can't imagine what the reason would be.

New That isn't it.
The simple reason is that the USofA didn't see any REASON to get involved.

Despite claims to the contrary, oppression, death, violence, etc. are NOT the reasons that the USofA decides to involve itself in the affairs of other countries.
New Explain further please

New I think he means that
The United States has a policy of looking out for its interests (whatever those might be) and tacking on the human interest information to drum up basic support.

Saddam Hussein *is* a royal bastard, megalomaniac, and grade-a despot, but I seriously doubt we'd be paying much attention to him if there wasn't a lot of oil in the area.

And while he *is* a royal bastard, megalomaniac, and grade-a despot, he was considered a stabilizing influence in the region when we were trying to contain Communism.

New Funny thing...
Bosnia and Kosovo were both derided by the military and foreign affairs wonks as things the US shouldn't get involved in. :)
