New XBox losses double from previous quarter
[link|http://news.com.com/2100-1001-983083.html?tag=fd_top|http://news.com.com/...3.html?tag=fd_top]

Microsoft's Home and Entertainment segment, which includes the Xbox, PC games and the company's TV products, posted an operating loss of $348 million in the quarter on revenue of $1.28 billion. A year earlier it had a loss of $180 million on revenue of $833 million.

The company loses money on each Xbox it sells, with some analysts pegging the shortfall at more than $100 per $199 console, meaning that strong sales for the platform actually increase its losses.

New Hey... give 'em a break...
...Tax Break that is... that's ALL that is Scott and you know it...

Microsoft has always gotten into markets like that, look at the Web-Browsers, the Applications Development suites, the Office Suite, Workstation OS, Server OS (until recently)... nearly giving it away untill it become entrenched... Then sock it to them.

Oh well, MAYBE someday the public will become clue-stick-ified... Nah...

New Lost far less then hoped
They lost far less then they hoped to, I imagine. The XBox is still in the lose money on each box stage, and all things considered they didn't lose much. They would have been happier losing 2 or 3 times as much, because it would have meant major market share.

I think the bit at the end is more interesting
In the filing, Microsoft also said that it had guaranteed the repayment of yen-denominated bank loans for an undisclosed entity in which it has an investment. Microsoft said the guarantees, which continue until the loans and interest have been repaid in full, had a maximum amount of $559 million at Dec. 31. It also said it could recover a portion of the guarantees if the entity was liquidated.

Which Japan based company would MS be willing to risk that kind of money for? I'm guessing it's Sega, part of the deal for the recent XBox only games from Sega despite Playstation-2 having 5 times the market share. Sega had better watch their backs, because MS isn't beyond promsing money and then holding it back on some trivial pretext to kill companies they get a stake of.

Only Olaf Stapledon ever succeeded on this kind of scale, and Olaf Stapledon is dead.
