New Hasn't Wade mentioned, "trainride to work" ?
While the odds look pretty good..? pls. check-in, Wade!
New I'm fine.
It was an inter-urban train travelling from Sydney to Wollongong and it's industrial town of Port Kembla. I haven't caught the train to work for nearly a year now since we moved office and in any case it would have been going in the wrong direction. :-) (Meerkat trains to work, but also in the other direction. Gibbo, the third Aussie here, lives in Queanbeyan, not Sydney.)

There were about 80 people on the train, with 41 injured and 9 killed, including the driver. The crash location was about 1 to 2 kms south of a village called Waterfall which is the termination point for most suburban services on that line. The line at that point travels through some extremely rugged landscape with several cuttings, embankments, tunnels, difficult grades and steep corners. There was a belief amongst many of the survivors that the train was travelling too fast, but there has been no official speculation of what might have caused it. The train left the tracks on a left-hand curve, careening across the other line* and riding up the opposite embankment, demolishing overhead power staunchions. The first and second carriages are mangled as a result, the third and fourth are less damaged but are on their side.

This is summarised from an ABC radio report and an ABC news report. Also, a [link|http://www.abc.net.au/news/2003/01/item20030131084832_1.htm|News report from the ABC web site]**. The URL shouldn't change.

I'm sure many commuters are breathing a small sigh of relief it wasn't the other side of Waterfall: otherwise the extremely busy Illawarra line would be disrupted for a day or two, rather than less busy South Coast line.

Also, since the news report assumes familarity with Sydney: Helensburgh is the very next station after Waterfall (but still some 5 or 6 kms on) and Thirroul is the next major station south after that. Sutherland is the next major station in the other direction from Waterfall.

Wade.

* Trains almost always travel on the left-hand track in Australia.

** It probably looks funny that I appear to be relying on one news company for all this, but the [link|http://www.abc.net.au/|ABC] has a high reputation for quality journalism in Australia so I tend to turn to them first.

New That part of Sydney is remote - on the fringe of the city

The heavy train traffic is on the lines from the west which is more or less straigh inland from Sydney city.

I for one am surprised an accident would happen down there. I don't ever recall of one there before (Wade ?) whereas the western & northern lines have had their regular share.

My bet is that in the heat (has been stinking hot in Sydney) the rails buckled & if as Wade mentioned, the train was going a bit faster than normal, over she goes.

New It was a bit unusual, I'll grant.
I'm pretty sure the line has not been totally accident free, but there hasn't been anything like that for a long, long time. Even the most recent in Sydney was a year or so ago out past the northern fringe (Hexham: goods train and inter-urban train collided; the cause is still unknown) and then 3 or 4 years ago on another line (Glenbrook: a Lithgow inter-urban ran up the back of the Indian Pacific; there were signal failures) and the one prior to that was, IIRC some 20 years prior (Granville; a suburban train jumped the tracks and hit a road bridge's central pillar). We've had train breakdowns a plenty, fortunately they usually stay on their rails!

Yesterday (i.e. the day before the accident) was very very hot: a lot of Sydney hit the low 40s. It is possible there was some line or equipment buckling. But I as I opened with, I very much doubt the South Coast line has been free from accidents all it's life. It was a very difficult line to build, with hideous grades and curves.

New Memories of Sydney rail...

The two-level cars, many of which do have some semblance of air\r\nconditioning, and raised platforms, combined with what appears to be a\r\nnot-entirely lost art of actually walking places, and the trend\r\ntoward shorts, skirts, or summery dresses among women, makes for some\r\nexcellent gamwatchting. Mmmm....

\r\n\r\n

And to think that some people seemed to feel it was only good for\r\nwatching feet. As I said then, "If you lift your gaze a few\r\ndegrees...".

\r\n\r\n

I can fully appreciate calf idolization.

New Heh, I remember my Mum talking about the controversy
when the double-decker carriages were being introduced. Apparently there was the usual tabloid-newspaper-style indignation about the inappropriateness of having people sitting so low, should a lady in a skirt walk by.

As for crash updates - the derailed train had a 'black box' data recorder. It was retrieved undamaged, anaylsed, and found to be not actually switched on. Apparently the black boxes were a recommendation after the previously mentioned train disaster at Glenbrook... I guess actually switching the black boxes on will be a recommendataion after this event. :-/

New Double-decker capacity.
IIRC, Sydney has one of the highest passenger-per-train capacities in the world, largely due to almost all trains being 8 double-decker carriages.

New HDDD

They're pretty high-density double-deckers too, with an underslung\r\nlower deck. Double-decking largely doubles carrying capacity.

\r\n\r\n

US DD systems are fairly common -- the rolling stock on both the\r\nChicago Metra and Peninsula Cal-Train are identical. While there are\r\ntwo levels to the trains, the top decks are sort of "mezzanine" style.\r\nBenches are three-seaters below, but only single-seaters above, so the\r\ncapacity boost is only about 25% for the higher set of seats.

New And I've survived.
Actually for a bit of info I've moved out of Queanbeyan in NSW to the environs of Canberra in the ACT (Australian Capital Territor).
It's like going from one world to another croosing the border between ACT and NSW.
Queanbeyan, for those who don't know edges onto the border of the ACT and NSW.
Had enough drama in the past few days with the bush fires.
Currently it's a reprive, but their is still a state of alert.
On top of that we are due to get our 'What to do in a terrorist attack' info pack sometime soon.
Better watch out there considering I've spent a bit of time with Trotskyists :-)
The glorious leader John Howard has also been playing the political game reinforcing the mood of fear.
His speech writer (who should be taken out and shot) had the PM compare the bushfires to a terrorist attack on Australia's capital.
Humph!
New Glad you checked in - as to the Trotsky folk ,
Hey! I'll trade you a couple Compassionate Conservatives for any one of them.. lots more fun - they smile more :-)

New Re: Glad you checked in - as to the Trotsky folk ,
They may appear dour, but the one's I've known sure know how to have fun.
Knew one who had a similar appreciation of the merits of a Hawaiin shirt. :)
The bushfire alert for the ACT has been lifted so now it's time for post-mortem and hopefully better understanding.
