Today, the brackets et al are back to normal.

I have a theory...I had 2 instances of the browser open at the time. One was pointed to an internal help desk/documentation site, that uses its own funny character set. it could be that, with both browsers open, some global variable somewhere attached the wrong character set globally to all instances of the browser. Today, after closing down both browsers (but not rebooting) all is well....

Ahhh, computing in the 21st Century...
