New swing away
I watched it recently too. There were some obvious holes in the story. For instance how come the aliens can jump onto and off of a 10ft roof, can run amazingly fast, but can't avoid a guy with a baseball bat? Trees & forest, corn & stalks, I know. But for me it broke the involvement in the story that had been developed. What I was really hoping for was that the aliens would not have been shown at all. If they had remained shadows and sounds, that would have been much more effective. Instead we had the cliched green men with funky eyes.

Anyway, yes it was a good movie. My favourite scenes were when Mel was at the table declaring that he would not waste any more time on prayer, the reaction of his family was perfect. Later he is seen crying saying "I hate you". Yeah, very moving and very real.
Have fun,

New A totally bizarre overlap of many great movies
While you are "right" about showing the aliens - it was in the tradition of "War of the Worlds".

Then there was "Dirty Harry" - remember that part? Which kind are you? Do you see signs? Or are you just lucky? Well punk?

"The Natural" of course.

"Poltergeist" - the TV and the girl.

"ET" - the field and the swings.

The music - pure Bernard Hermann in "Psycho".

The enclosed space and the bad night - "The Thing".

"Home Alone" - the frail boy is on top of things.

"Catch-22" - the recurring flashback to a horrific moment.

"Fargo" - the somewhat distracted top cop - a woman in a prowler.

I am just blown away. The camera motion is on the same level as Scorcese. The sense of dread and apprehension is worthy of Hitchcock. I was really scared by this movie. The plot "holes" are irrelevant - this movie is about faith and fear and making it.

New Nice to see we agree about something again. :)

Many fears are born of stupidity and ignorance -
Which you should be feeding with rumour and generalisation.
BOfH, 2002 "Episode" 10
New need to get more pop corn
"Which kind are you? Do you see signs? Or are you just lucky? Well punk?" - I remember that scene and thinking Dirty Harry.

ET - yeah all we needed were a couple of kids on bicycles to make it more obvious.

The Natural, Poltergeist, Psycho, The Thing, Home Alone, Catch-22, Fargo - I haven't seen any of those movies. Ok, I've seen trailers for Home Alone and snippets of the shower scene in Psycho, but that's about it. I guess I'm cinematically challenged. or something.
Have fun,
