Situation reminds me of Dian Fossey's remarks, when she set out to study chimps -
"Oh you mustn't give the specimens names - they don't 'think' as we do.. just numbers.."
(Yes, this is what passed for "scientific objectivity" in that particular backwater - and long before anyone IMAGINED actual sign-language communication with another sentient species. Later, one such non-thinking 'species member' finally proved capable of describing how her mother was killed by a poacher. And how she felt about that traumatic event..)
