New do you like drinking your enviro friendly gas additives?

solving problems often create new unintended consequences.
"A study released last year by the U.S. Geological Survey (news - web
sites) and the Oregon Graduate Institute's Department of Environmental Study said about a third of drinking water wells in 31 states might be contaminated with MTBE. "

New Re: do you like drinking your enviro friendly gas additives?
The really great thing is that MTBE doesn't actually reduce emissions much anymore. Only older cars with high emission rates are helped by MTBE. Newer cars already cut emissions to less then 1/10 of what older cars produce and what little emission MTBE reduces is very likely offset by the fact that MTBE is a volitile substance that probably adds to smog itself.

New not to mention..
that MTBE can actually harm fuel system components in older cars such as floats, float needles, some rubber components.

It can also reduce fuel mileage in most newer cars because the engine runs leaner, the computer compensates by increasing the amount of fuel in each injector shot therefore putting more overall emission out the tailpipe.

The same effect makes older, carbureted cars run lean which can INCREASE carbon monoxide levels...not to mention drastically reduce engine life.

I'll see if I can find the article I read on this recently.
