I wanted Gnome 2, since that is what I have on RH8.0. So, [link|http://www.linuxcompatible.org/|per instructions] you add a couple lines to /etc/sources.list:

deb [link|http://people.debian.org/~kov/debian|http://people.debian.org/~kov/debian] woody gnome2
deb-src [link|http://people.debian.org/~kov/debian|http://people.debian.org/~kov/debian] woody gnome2

Then run:

apt-get update
apt-get install gnome gdm2

You do need to answer a few question, but considering that Gnome 1.4 has to come out and roughly 100 items need to be updated, it went without a hitch. I did reboot since GUI terminal 7 vanished, but that's because I wasn't sure how to re-initialize it.
