For the bleary-eyed able to stomach a tidbit of health news after ringing in the New Year, more Americans are getting fat and drunk each year, with sometimes deadly results, researchers said on Tuesday.
More than one in five American adults could be classified as obese in 2001, up almost 6 percent from the year before. And more than one in four Americans engage in bouts of binge drinking -- defined as five or more drinks at one sitting with the goal of getting drunk -- up 35 percent from 1995.
"I guess you could say we're fat and drunk," said Timothy Naimi, a researcher at the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (news - web sites) in Atlanta, summarizing a pair of studies based on a huge telephone survey of more than 200,000 adults.

Sounds like a pretty reasonable response to life in Bushamerica to me. Dan O'Neill put it nicely thirty years ago:

cordially,

New But what is the main reason for getting drunk
if not to try and forget your problems for a while? With the way this country is going, I'd get drunk too if it didn't make me physically sick in doing so. My doctor says no, so I avoid drinking.

Good news for the beer and other liquor makers. Their stock must be up up up with all this heavy drinking going on?

If you do drink, remeber to drink in moderation and don't drive drunk, ok? Thanks.

From those hopeful daze when.. many folks thought you could somehow Change Greed\ufffd, starting from inside..

Thanks, a vu to deja. Alas, Ronnie (after a bit of practice with the CHP in Berkeley, at Sproul Hall) corrected that misapprehension Real fast, as we saw. Then many of the former - unsuited to much serious thinking actually - got their MBAs, picked-up real easy, how to pillage..

Cheers,

New Salaam y gracias!
I think I remember that one - in the Barb? Oohhh.. those wads of $1K bills ejected at sonic velocity.. can poke out a spleen. (I owned some Nortons - his model was, I believe a Dominator 99, also my fav of the street versions.)

Somewhere I have a few dozen of his rapier sharpies, in livid B&W newsprint. But I dasn't tarry long in that last hopeful period of reform, for today the Fat Cats outnumber the Nortons, and now they have Kevlar over the Teflon..

New And this is a problem how?

"binge"? I guess it could be called that.
New No way
I'm a recovering addict.

I KNOW what a binge is.

A binge lasts over 1 day and might run into a week. It is drinking / drugging past the point you should have crashed and gone to sleep. It is a day of bed spins. It is speeding for 2 days on meth and cocaine, having your adrenaline kick in the 3rd day, and having to double dose on qualudes and tequila just do you can shut your eyes long enough to pretend to get some rest as the ants crawl all over your body, stimulating every hair folicle, and a high pitch sqeal digs into your brain. It is mixing meth with speed acid and not stop hallucinating for a month.

5 drinks? Most adults can handle 5 drinks over a 3 hour period. They'll get drunk, but not wasted. And 3 hours is a reasonable amount of time to hang out with friends, listening to the band or dancing at the bar.

Total crock.
New Now that sounds more accurate.
