New What's this "Iraqi people" everybody's talking about?
[image|http://www.lib.utexas.edu/maps/middle_east_and_asia/iraq_ethnoreligious_1992.jpg||||]

Saddam and Dubya are both talking as if the phrase "the Iraqi people" actually means something. But which of these peoples is the "Iraqi people" and what do we do with the rest of them?

And yes, it [link|http://www.lib.utexas.edu/maps/middle_east_and_asia/iraq_dissident_areas_1992.jpg|does matter].

Where's Abdul Rahman Yasin?
The reason I don't budge is I'm waiting for you to catch up.

An attack on Iraq is expected to see the first use of high-power microwave weapons that produce a split-second spike of energy powerful enough to damage electronic components and scramble computer memories.

New Heh.
Totally off topic here:

I haven't lost a game of Risk in 8+ years. I've played TONS of games, just haven't lost any. Really weird.

New America is for WHITE people!
Note the use of the word "ethnoreligious" group in that illustration.

"Iraq" is a "nation".

A "nation" can have citizens of different "ethnoreligious" groups.

I know of another group that has problems differentiating "ethnoreligious" and "nation".

They wear a lot of white and have pointy hoods.
New Can I take that to mean you're in favor of a Kurdistan?
Or that a similar map of the US would lead you to ask "What's this "American people" everyone's talking about?"

New Well, I'll grant you this much.
The idea of a Kurdistan is a lot less silly than the idea of an Iraq.

Meanwhile, in the United States, we have a set of shared values, and that's what makes a people a people. Except for Berkeley and DC, of course. And parts of New Jersey.

New OpEd: the opposite of nation building
[link|http://www.theamericanprowler.org/article.asp?art_id=2003_1_7_23_7_35|If something doesn't work, try something else]

Excerpt:

The principal champions in the Administration for this nation building apparently are Pentagon civilians, as well as people in and around, and possibly including, Dick Cheney, and assorted neo-cons both in and out of the White House. They all should know better, but they don't, and they seem to think they are on a divine mission: regime change in Iraq today, and then on to the rest of the Middle East, and maybe the Far East tomorrow.

Indeed you may think of them as the intellectual heirs of Leon Trotsky. He wanted to make the world a better place, and free the oppressed with what he called a permanent revolution. The neo-cons, in particular, want to do this, too, but our foreign policy would be in better hands if they didn't.

I say:

Eventually we're gonna have to shove democracy down the crazy bastards' throats. For our sake, not theirs. But for now we can take it slow.

And it really doesn't make any sense to keep Iraq intact. It never made any sense for Iraq to be intact in the first place.
