Welcome to IWETHEY!

New This my dear friend...
Is the singlemost... clearly defined... anecdotal example...

I have ever seen... it threw me back in my chair... really it did.

Now, this lesson can be applied to nearly ANYTHING. Really it can and should be.

Thank you... you have, seriously, altered my way of thinking... with-out even knowing it!

Now, to actually figure out HOW this applies now that my head is spinning again... To re-address *EVERYTHING* for Yet Another Time... And you guys thought I was set in my ways...

And [link|/forums/render/content/show?contentid=72164|here is the post] for those of you that missed it, posted by [link|/forums/render/user?username=ToddBlanchard|Todd Blanchard].

And Todd... Thanks.

New That was a sincere note to Todd Blanchard....
It has changed me. That single story caused a "SNAP" to happen.

Dunno, by read it I see things differently already.

BTW, the Jinux Journal has a good article by Doc Searls called "Caring Less".

It really gets to the grit of the issue about "Linux".. the real point of it.

New Re: That was a sincere note to Todd Blanchard....
Would like to see that - is it online?

My main issue with Linux is that my system is never done - I care too much. I'm always forced to tweak this or that, and end up wasting time. Once I wasted an entire day fucking around with groff so that man pages would occupy the entire terminal width :)

I wish I could just *live* with it. That's one reason I want a Mac. No tweaking possible or required.

(BTW Windows tweaking is a thankless task. At least Linux tweaking produces results.)
-drl
New Ummm....
No tweaking???
Check out this site [link|http://www.macosxhints.com/|http://www.macosxhints.com/] and tell me what you think...

Not much is required but some tweaking is a good thing...

I'm a step ahead of you though. Been Maccing for many a year now and not looking back. Still have Linux on my intel boxen though...

And since I have been scarce around here, let me take this opportunity to tell you that I am half way certifiable (passed the Solaris Sys Admin I test...) Hope all is well with you.
Just a few thoughts,

Dan

Well, without the beard (which I no longer have) at least... ;-)

New There is a slight resemblance...
Only I think I may have been born a few years before you... As I told DRL in a prior thread, this pitcher ome is about 20 years old now... I'm still looking (groping about?) for a decent recent pic. I may have to abandon the search soon and face the fact that I'm getting old.

But I will take this opportunity to compliment you on your handsome appearance! :-)

Ummm... I'm signing off for now.
Just a few thoughts,

New Nope it is in issue 106...
Which I just got in my mailbox...

Good stuff the month... issue 105 didn't garner any feelings from me.

New No tweaking
you must be thinking about the Amiga, it was the only computer that I knew about that didn't require a lot of tweaking. Anything that you could tweak, had a program to do it for you either built into the OS or freeware or shareware. Even had one called "MacGag" that gave it all the video effects that the Macintiosh had, as freeware for the Amiga, like the rubber band shrinking and growing of windows as they opened. You could see the difference in the time it took to do this effect verses not being able to do it. A complete waste of processor cycles, but built into the Mac and not able to be turned off.

So go ahead, buy a Mac, what is stopping you? Join the crowd that has left the PC, joined the Mac, went back to the PC, and then joined the Mac for when OSX came out, and now have to read a hints web page to tweak their system.

Or you could just wait until Freedows gets finished, like maybe the next Ice Age? I really liked the idea of that OS, but it took them too darn long to even get the kernel finished. What they had was basically a skeleton OS that used FreeDOS to run some old DOS programs. Even Linux and DOSEMU did a much better job than the Freedows Alpha developer test did.

Ah, give me the old DOS system, at least there it ran on small hard drives, older hardware, and didn't have the GUI crap that slows things down. It was not that hard to configure, but it did have a lot of limitations. Like a 640K memory limit, unless you used himem.sys and emm386.exe and special DOS programs that used it. Also it was optimized for an 8086/8088 CPU. OS/2 1.X was a 286 version of DOS until they added the GUI to it.

Actually when you think about it, OS/2 is much easier to tweak than Linux or Windows 9X/NT/2K/XP is. deSitter, think about buying a copy of eCS and see what you think about it. OS/2 is not dead, at least not yet, as long as there is an Internet, and people willing to support it. You got many friends on here who will show you the way to get OS/2 support and programs. [link|http://home.houston.rr.com/spiceware/|Spiceware even wrote some of the emulators for OS/2]. Nice guy, Darrell, one of the few people I like who keep me sticking around this forum. He took a picture of me at Arby's last Christmas time, when I weighed 280 pounds, I am now down to 260 pounds. But I am rambling, choose whatever OS you think is the best.

New Glad you enjoyed it.
But why religion...?

Nevermind - I got it.
I am out of the country for the duration of the Bush administration.
Please leave a message and I'll get back to you when democracy returns.

I invited her up to my place for a little midnight bait. I said, "Come on, baby. It'll only take a few minnows." She threw me that same old line: "Not tonight, I've got a haddock."
