Welcome to IWETHEY!

New Looks like I have my fun cut out for me.
Have an old [link|http://www.archos.com/lang=en/products/fam_music_mp3.html|ARCHOS] mp3 jukebox with a 6 gig drive. Drive is sounding bad...bearings probably...very bad whine when the drive is spinning.

Its still working...but not for long..so I decide to repair instead of replace...just ordered a 20 gig fujitsu laptop drive (same form factor and height (9.5mm)

So it looks like I'll be following [link|http://www.mctubster.com/hd.html|these instructions] as soon as UPS brings me my new drive.

Wish me luck.

New Luck! And thanks for the pointer.
New No problem.
I might even do a blow by blow doc just for fun.

"Welcome to Rivendell, Mr. Anderson..."
New Drive arrived yesterday.
Current one started really acting up today in the office.

I have my project for the weekend :)

New Thats what I get for starting projects at 3am
I looked around for the camera...it wasn't close enough...so no pictures. I may provide a picture of the drive that was replaced though...because that pinhole...the one clearly marked "Do Not Cover"...well wouldn't you know...that great french QC...slapped the 2 sided tape holding the plate to the drive right over that sucker.

So...it was only a matter of time. I'm surprised it lasted this long considering the number of planes its been on.

Drive is formatting now...looks like I have a 20 gig 6 gig mp3 player now:-)

Some notes.

Easier than I thought...though the screws holding on the cover are deceptive. The ones at the top of the unit come out very easily...and you would expect the same on the bottom next to the USB. Wrong...the screws on either side of the USB are twice as long. Deceptive.

Also...the screws go through the lid back into the lid. I may take a photo of this when I wake up (cover is still off). Its pretty flimsy...so pushing down to keep the screwdriver in the tiny heads will likely bend the plastic...lesson...make sure you have a small philips head screwdriver that fits perfectly...this way you avoid bending these pieces.

Oh yeah...he lists a T-10 bit...I used a T-9.

Also...it may be a good idea to have a couple of strips of 2 sided tape. The plate doesn't come off of the drive cleanly. There was enough stick left to put it on the new drive...but it would have been nice to have at least one clean piece to make sure it doesn't slip.

Drive in unit was a 6g 4200 rpm 9.5mm Fujutisu...replaced with same form rotation drive...just 20g. 87 with free shipping from avlogic.

And I didn't cover the pressure hole :-)

=====added in edit====

I tried to use Drive Manager in W2k as suggested...but it didn't seem to want to offer me "Create Partition" as a selection on the USB drive. So I used Partition Magic. One more reason to love that app!

New My 20GB Archos Recorder has the click of death.
It won't boot up any more. :-( I've just ordered a [link|http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16822146229|80 GB Seagate] replacement. I hope the replacement goes as easily for me as it did for you.

Wish me luck!

Cheers,
Scott.
New Luck!

New See my post to bepatient...
My buddy loves Rockbox - you might want to try it out...

New Replacement was easy.
I put the new drive in a cheap Kingwin external USB enclosure and formatted it FAT32 with OS X (Disk Utility -> Erase -> MS-DOS Format). (XP will only format FAT32 to 32 GB.) I then used the instructions (in this thread) to install the new drive. It was pretty easy.

I then powered it up and .... It also hung on bootup, until I plugged in the power adapter. Then it spun up and everything seems fine. It's much quieter than the old 20 GB Hitachi drive that came with it.

I'm defragging the old 20 GB drive now. It seems fine.

It's looking like the rechargeable batteries in the Archos are marginal, and the 20 GB drive might have some problems, but it seems OK in an external USB enclosure.

I'll try RockBox when I get some time.

So far, so good...

Cheers,
Scott.
New Does it strike anyone else as odd..
..that you used a Mac to DOS work because windows won't?

New Apparently Linux would have worked, too.
:-)

I'm not at all surprised. As an old OS/2 user, I'm used to these things.

I'm just glad I knew about the issue before I spent 3 hours trying to get Windows to do it....

Cheers,
Scott.

New Riiich
has an Archos - he just replaced the drive AND he installed [link|http://www.rockbox.org/|Rockbox] on the thing - he says it's as if he has a new device - he loves it! And you know how picky he can be...
