New Some good news for a change...
American cultural imperialism trumped by American greed:

U.S. TV Shows Losing Potency Around World

"...Today American dramas and sitcoms...increasingly occupy fringe time slots on foreign networks....The shift counters a longstanding assumption that TV shows produced in the United States would continue to overshadow locally produced shows from Singapore to Sicily. The changes are coming at a time when the influence of the United States on international affairs has chafed friends and foes alike, and some people are expressing relief that at least on television American culture is no longer quite the force it once was...

"Unlike in the United States, commercial broadcasting in most regions of the world...is a relatively recent development. A majority of broadcasters in many countries were either state-owned or state-subsidized for much of the last century. Governments began to relax their control in the 1980's by privatizing national broadcasters and granting licenses to dozens of new commercial networks. The rise of cable and satellite pay television increased the spectrum of channels.

"Relatively inexperienced and often financed on a shoestring, these new commercial stations needed hours of programming \ufffd fast. The cheapest and easiest way to fill air time was to buy shows from American studios, and the bidding wars for popular shows...were fierce.

"The big American studios took advantage of that demand by raising prices and forcing foreign broadcasters to buy less-popular programs if they wanted access to the best-selling shows and movies.

"'The studios priced themselves out of prime time,' said Harry Evans Sloan, chairman of SBS Broadcasting, a Pan-European broadcaster."

New I knew that
when ABC had to go to the BBC to get a game show like "The Weakest Link", you know that US TV Networks are running out of ideas. Then all those reality TV shows like the "Drive Norman Nuts" show that puts cameras in the walls of my house, and follow me everywhere as people walk up to me and say crazy things in order to try to drive me back into the hospital again. November 4th was sweaps weak, so they had to decide to fire me from the phoney job they gave me, and that helped to set me over the edge. So millions tuned in to see what happened to me. Then later when the show got dull, they withheld my colon medicine and then had two security guards drop my head on the floor a few times after I passed out in pain in the bathroom and they tried to pull me out of the bathroom and kept hitting my semi-conscience head on the floor.

Anyway apparently that show didn't do too well in other countries, where it is showing right now. I think David Hasselhoff in "Night Rider" is kicking my show's rear end in Germany. :)

New Norman, Norman...
I'm going to stretch and assume that you're poking fun at yourself here--because otherwise you're starting to piss me off--and caution you that it's too early in the new year for this, and that you need to let a certain interval elapse (like about ten months) during which you stay off the topic, near and dear as it may be, of Norman the Persecuted, even in jest. Can do do that, pal? For me (a simple yes or no response will suffice)?

impatiently,

"Die Welt ist alles, was der Fall ist."
New Bad Boy, Bad Boy, Watcha gonna do? :-)
Watcha gonna do when they comin for you!??

Just because you're paranoid doesn't mean "they" aren't >really< out to get you!

New The paranoia quote-
I thought it went like so
Thinking everyone is out to get you doesn't mean you are paranoid.

They are out to get you. Paranoia is thinking the are all working together.
Why should we ask our military to die for cheap oil when the rest of us aren't even being asked to get better mileage?

New Yes it was a joke
that is why I put the smiley face there. But oh well, I didn't mean to piss you off, sorry about that.

If they did do a reality TV show about my life, it wouldn't do very well in the ratings anyway, it would be cancled on the first day of the showing for being too boring.

I was trying to really be a goody... actually used my "new to me" English->Finnish->English Travelers Dictionary I picked up at a used book shop. Looks about 35 years old... Published in 1967... ;)

But you got the Drift... at least!

I'm sure there are many others that I'm not aware of.

Darrell Spice, Jr.

New And the Brit versions are almost invariably much much better
Remember, "third-party" countries (who are in the habit of importing from both sources) often get *both* versions (on different channels, for instance), so we can compare.

New More shows..
(note: "Who's line" may be unique, as they started filming it (later) in the US).

Junkyard Yards = Scrapeheap Challenge

Trading Spaces has an equivalent as well, although I don't know which came first.
New s/Yards/Wars, n'est-ce pas?
New Yes, thank you.
New There was an American AbFab wasn't there?
And a Red Dwarf as well.

Game shows are licenced far and wide so I'm not sure if that counts.

Still, .au has licenced the occasional 'reality TV' US show - there was Australian Survivor, which apparently was way inferior to the US one. (I kept well away from either.)

I don't know who copied which Temptation Island from whom, all I'm wondering is why they ever bothered :-)

As for other shows, there used to be an Australian version of 'Are You Being Served'. (The slightly amusing thing is there really is a large department store here called Grace Bros.)
John. Busy lad.
New To quote Apocalypse Now: "The horror... The horror..."
New More culchah: Joseph Conrad (

New And BTW, "Survivor" isn't American originally - it's Swedish
New Re: And BTW, "Survivor" not Yanqui -originally Sweededish
So which network do we e-mail the abuse to :-)

Goota kick someone for that half-assed show.

Cheers Doug
(pick a group of non-entities who are certain to piss on each other, give them some kiddie fantasy games to play that provide them with the opportunities to piss on each other, then film the brawling, scrapping, back-stabbing result :-)

PS (SCOTT! We gotta fix these error messages about title being too long when replying :-)
New Well, *that* would probably be the Yanks you'd want, then...
New Sometimes they don't get far. Fortunately.
The US Red Dwarf - which was going to star Terry Farrell* as the Cat - never got to pilot, AFAIK.
