Welcome to IWETHEY!

New IWeThey.DebianUsers++
It's great having a day off, isn't it? I used part of mine to do something almost productive - finally started installing Debian onto an old P200.

I used the Progeny Debian install disks - which weren't quite as 'friendly' as touted, but it got there in the end. The X windowing system install was a pain, but that wasn't a real big surprise.

So there may well be a raft of Debian-related questions on there way - you have been warned :)

New One more reason...

...to love you madly, John.

X install goes better once you get up to Woody. apt-get install xserver-xfree86 runs you through a (ncurses) installer / configurer. If you're on typical Aussie metered downloads, check out atp-zip and hie thee to a decent form of removeable storage. 125 - 250 MB capacity will be good for most updates and transfers.

As for your questions, I and my persons of hench (snobbian class) are at your call either here or on jabber.

New *blush*
And why else do you think I installed it, anyway :-)

I have the Woody CDs, so I'll upgrade to that when I have the time. And when I work out how to tell apt-get to look to the CDs for packages.
John. Busy lad.
New Telling apt-get to look at CDs: apt-cdrom

Run apt-cdrom and feed your CDs into the CD drive. They'll be added to your /etc/apt/sources.list file. Run apt-get update && apt-get dist-upgrade and, with luck, you'll get an update off the CDs. You can modify this file by hand as well, or use apt-setup.

\r\n\r\n

Without luck, you may want to read my recent posts and Rick Moen's advice on packages to update first when doing a potato => woody upgrade.

New Thanks - I might have a go at it this weekend.
John. Busy lad.
New Have you had a go yet?
Hi.
Have you succeeded in your Debian installation yet?
I can tell you it's great fun.
In fact the stability of 'stable' is so effective that I've been running on 'unstable' versions for so long just for the thrill.
So far I've only had three occasions with Sid where I had to muck around with /etc/apt and muck about with installing/uninstalling apps.
Otherwise everything has been running smoothly.
In fact my only problem with the computer now is the hardware is suffering :(
