New Bush plans pervasive Internet monitoring
[link|http://www.internetwk.com/breakingNews/INW20021220S0007|http://www.internetw.../INW20021220S0007]

My main question about articles like this is how long it is until this government starts to crack down on "pirate" operating systems (eg Debian Linux, OpenBSD) that make it easy to evade centralized monitoring, while also not being amenable to government pressure to add back doors. (Doors like the ones that I suspect are in Windows - perhaps it is paranoia but I find Doug Marker's problems very suspicious...)

Ben

New They'll just call them 'hacker tools'..
And send a few users to prison.

And that'll be that.

New Surely.. most possessed of an IQ > waist size
have deemed this as inevitable as - the now implementation via technological advance, of most facets of 1984/BNWorld etc. Is it really news that, there always exists a group whose major aim is the control of difference via an Authority possessing the power to implement that control?

Who would have imagined - before the Convenient Shock of 9/11 (so now like the Endless War With Oceania?) the overt subversion of basic Constitutional protections of citizens from government - already a fait accompli, in a mere FIFTEEN MONTHS!

Surely.. given the technical complexity and the dumbth of the avge non-voter (and of the Corp-representatives who no longer represent him/her) -- it is today 12/21/02 a crap-shoot about How Soon comes an all- Ashcroft/DOJ/Microsoft hegemony over most-all 'communications' techno. I presume that only cost priorities (of enforced change to 'all secure' hardware and comfort.nyet) is determining the schedule.

(Unless of course the unthinkable occurs: consumers return to citizenship and Throw This Cabal Out !?) But then.. the pre-War current state appears today to be embraced by a majority.

Does anyone imagine that more than a handful of Muricans either knows or cares about this topic? :(
