New Lott betting odds
On the surface it seems obvious that Trent Lott is on the way out. His comments will only look worse the longer he stays, no amount of apology can really cover for his history.

But Lott has found the defense he needs to hold on to his post. He is threatening to leave the Senate if removed from office.

This would mean the governor of Mississippi would get to appoint a replacement. This would result in a Democrat being appointed, resulting in a 50-50% split in the Senate.

With that little bit of backing I'm actually putting the odds at 5 to 4 that he manages to hold on to his office.

New chuckle - chuckle. Poor choice of words.
Frankly Lott is now trying last ditch attempts to keep his [link|http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/articles/A59566-2002Dec15.html| job. ]

But he's not getting the best of help, is he?

"I think we should not lynch him," Sen. Richard C. Shelby (Ala.) said on CNN's "Late Edition." "I believe right now that Lott would have the confidence of the caucus."

New Hard to be Leader when you're threatening to defect...
50 Republicans still leaves them in control (via Cheney), so it's not much of a threat. Plus, it's an idiotic statement. How can you convince others to follow your political lead if you're overtly willing to give your opponents an advantage and reduce your party's power? It's stupid, but then so was his statement at Strom's party....

I think he'll be convinced to step down as leader soon (next 1-2 months). The press and the Democrats are going to make sure his Strom statement doesn't go away. In addition, if he's not able to somehow convince people in Mississippi that he's better than his comments, I also expect that he'll not seek relection to the Senate (or be defeated if he does).

My $0.02.

Cheers,
Scott.
New Hmmmm - Ah Yes... the last 5-4 decision...

New Updated odds

Bush formally cuts Lott loose, clearing the way for him to be removed from office.

This significantly lowers Trent's odds because the danger of crossing the vindictive Bush White House is a major factor to many Republican Senators.

I would drop his odds to being 1 to 2 against now.

New Well, when faced with a Real Leader of Men,
(even one whose entire funding must come from Them)

Republicrats are equally gutless - whether it's about the Constitution or about the tenure of A Good Old Boy, caught talking out of the cloak room with understanding peers.

Fine speech by Barbara Boxer today on NPR (World Affairs Council) in which she postulated that this is about a Lot more than 'Lott'. Have to see if that speech is transcripted.. She even gave it a title ~ to do with "Six Principles". (Too early for Google) Maybe she sounded even Presidential.

She spoke of the terror, in Florida as a young girl - black folks in the back of the bus, etc. "Why, mommie?" All evoked starkly by this lugubrious cracker's longing for that Status Quo.

Maybe best if he stays in power, to remind once again.. in timely fashion before any next election? (if we have another election) - how many in the Congress share his nostalgia. But weasel a lot, in civilian company.

New There is no "if"
There will be elections.

Everybody has elections.

And when you own the courts, there isn't any reason not to.
