Welcome to IWETHEY!

New Guess:
Use apt-get to get the sources, then configure and install.
Regards,

-scott anderson

New Well sure, but then ...
If I try to apt-get upgrade it's not going to work. If this is true, I don't get the benefits of policy on anything that has to be configured other than how the maintainer does it. Correct?

New Dunno, ask Karsten or Peter or Greg. :-P
No clue... I've been running Debian for all of a day. And in a chroot jail, no less.

New Gotta do a Hold on the packages you customize.
D/L the Sources and Re-Make the packages the way you want... then make a ".deb" out of 'em.

After that you continue to Hold those packages... or make it so that when you do and upgrade it'll skip those too.

I have been dinkin around with Debian. It has a great interface for doing this kind of stuff.

Sepically me doing funky things.

New Bzzt, Sorry, that's the wrong answer, Greg.
The answer is to use one of the slew of source package thingers, like apt-source and apt-build, to make and install your stuff.

Thanks fer your correction...
