New Klaatu Barada nikto
Aways wondered the inspiration for the made up language of Gort... (For non-DTWSS folks [link|http://www.dreamerwww.com/tdtess/sitemap.htm|http://www.dreamerww...dtess/sitemap.htm] ) For a while, I was under the impression that it was some form of scrambled Russian (unlike the blatant Clockwork Orange "slang"...{side side note, Burgess does a brilliant job of showing the process of brainwashing in his novel})

For example, nikto could roughly be a Russian transliteration of the English "noone" (nukto). Don't have my Russian English dictionary handy to check on the other two words... Help anyone?

Long story short, I have a Sparc named Klaatu... More for the the Canadian rock group than for TDTWSS...

Barada - of Latin origin meaning "barbarian", but in context meaning "stop barbarism"

Necto - of Latin (Neco-atus, death, kill, slay) and French origin (to bind, entwine ) "necto", but in context meaning "bring back to life".

New Ever read the Nadsat glossary by Stanley Hyman?
unlike the blatant Clockwork Orange "slang"

The blatancy was intentional. :-) This is a society affected deeply by the communism and socialism of the rest of the world.

[link|http://www.geocities.com/casnolan/clockworkorange/clockwork.htm|http://www.geocities...nge/clockwork.htm]

Perhaps the most fascinating thing about the book is its language. Alex thinks and talks in the "nadsat" (teenage) vocabulary of the future. A doctor in the book explains it. "Odd bits of old rhyming sland," he says. "A bit of gypsy talk, too. But most of the roots are Slav. Propaganda. Subliminal penetration." Nadsat is not quite so hard to decipher as Cretan Linear B, and Alex translates it. I found that I could not read the book without compiling a glossary; I reprint it here, although it is entirely unauthorized, and some of it is guesswork.

At first the vocabulary seems incomprehensible: "you could peet it with vellocet or synthemesc or drencrom or one or two other veshches." Then the reader, even if he knows no Russian, discovers that some of the meaning is clear from context: "to tolchock some old veck in an alley and viddy him swim in his blood." Other words are intelligible after a second context: when Alex kicks a fallen enemy on the "gulliver" it might be any part of the body, but when a glass of beer is served with a gulliver, "gulliver" is head. (Life is easier, of course, for those who know the Russian word golova).

Anthony Burgess has not used Russian words mechanically, but with great ingenuity, as the transformation into "gulliver," with its Swiftian associates, suggests. Others are brilliantly anglicized: khorosho (good or well) as "horrowshow"; iudi (people) as "lewdies"; militsia (militia or police) as millicents. Burgess has not used Russian words in an American slang extension, such as nadsat itself, in the termination of the Russian numbers eleven to nineteen, which he breaks off independently on the analogy of our "teen". Thus kopat (to dig with a shovel) is used as "dig" in the sense of enjoy or under- stand; koshka (cat) and ptitsa (bird) become the hip "cat" and "chick"; neezhny (lower) turns into "neezhnies" (underpants); pooshka (cannon) becomes the term for a pistol; rozha (grimace) turns into "rozz", one of the words for policeman; samyi (the most) becomes "sammy" (generous); soomka (bag) is the slang "ugly woman"; vareet (to cook up) is also used in the slang sense, for something preparing or transpiring.

A friend was allegedly acquainted with Robert Wise and others involved with the screenplay for TDTESS. (Our conversations took place in the '80s IIRC).

I tend to trust that he was not embellishing or fantasizing; nothing is certain of course - when a homo-sap uses Language, unless the Word is Help !!!. It seems that there was indeed meant.. a more subtle metaphysical message, likely [then] associable with a sect whose leader was called 'The Maitreya' (never mind the obv. translation). I had imagined ~this before I heard these specifics. It wasn't just space opera, natch - McCarthyism was a boil not yet fully festered - and folks were Sooo naive and xenophobic! (Righteous goes without saying, so I won't)

Have to remember this was 1951! and very few Muricans had any foggiest notion that there was such a concept as 'metaphysics', and the only folks who knew about Europe (let alone India) were the WW-II kids who found they weren't in Kansas anymore.

Even those who availed selves of the GI Bill [perhaps the Finest provision ever forced against the reactive reptilian Repo-mindset.. and made actual! for all these youth] - didn't hear much of other than Xian theology, even in University.

Still, and aside from whatever is true about the Maitreya influence, merely the overt message re 'survival on a small planet' appears as timely in '02 - such has been our umm Progress.

New Re: Klaatu Barada Nikto - Revisited
Incre\ufffdble !!

It seems that many more hold this Sterling performance in as high esteem as I. The guestbook comments are worth the read, even. Ah to see this with a new print, in one of the few remaining non-plex Real movie houses left..

Then too - the Message is as valid today (as many others expressed) and the movies of '02, while making special effects at a billion/sec - lack the story, the actors (and their elocution!) and the perfect morphing of the er issues with the times. Many commented on the impression made, as children, and their repeated viewing since.

Thanks for this great central repository; I'll peruse some of the links as and when. And light a candle that no Yahoo imagines EVER! a 'remake' under inane '02 Marketing criteria w/ oblig. car chase, monster sex and heaped dead bodies.

(I see I must revise 'Nikkto' to Nikto - no less than Robert Wise spells it that way.) Finally.. the theremin was the perfect instrument for the arrival scenes. As reported - scared the shit outta lotsa 12 yos, way back then.

Cheers,

Ashton von Nikto
