Perhaps higher density, but low-yield, chips are used in 1 GB DIMM.

Board makers need to add more DIMM slots instead.

When I add memory to boxen, it feels
really cheap when I am at the 512MB mark.

Go higher, and I start wincing.
New Production volumes
The same pattern was there when 512s were introduced...where 2 256s were roughly half the cost of a 512.

They just started producing...not a huge demand...so there'a alot of fixed line costs being split across a much smaller number of chips.
