Why do sites with no reason to do so want to set cookies on my computer?

I can see a place like Ezboard wanting to track messages and such.

I can see some place like, say, MSNBC.com which might helpfully want to give you local news and stories.

But a freaking bad couch site? JESUS FORKING (pid = -1) CHRIST.
