New Windows 2000 server open file limit
Is there a limit to how many files can be open on a Windows 2000 server? One of our applications is trying to open a file and is being told by Windows that doing so would exceed the 512 open file limit. Nobody here is aware of any such limit; how it is set, or how it is enforced.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

New Never heard of that
Sure it's not the app?

New Possibly the app; not sure
Our app's logging is saying it got this back from the OS.

New Just checked Technet
The only thing I can find searching on "open file limit" is as follows--
The MultipleUsersOnConnection registry value was introduced in Service Pack 4 to
overcome the 2,048 open-file limit. In Microsoft Windows 2000, this limit is
changed to 8,192 and the MultipleUsersOnConnection registry value is not
available.

New Thanks for the info
I and another here spent a few hours searching the web. I hadn't got around to technet, yet. Maybe he did and didn't tell me. I find MS site searching a bit frustrating. I've found it a real challenge to get less than 200 results but more than 0 with just about any search. Lots of info in there, just a pain to find.

New Re: Windows 2000 server open file limit
Your probably not hitting the Windows limit but the C library run-time limit. If the program is written using MS C run-time library it has a much lower limit on open files then the OS can support.

The exact limit depends on which version of the libraries and what threading model the application uses. But I know that in some older versions the limit was as low as 64 files for a single threaded app.

Whatever the reason, if it's opening 512 files at once, it's doing something Really Bad.
