. . having to slide the window off to the left to use the screen edge as a ruler in hope of finding the parent post in a long running thread.

New No need to slide the window, I think:
I just set the mouse pointer on the current post's header (in the thread view), and then scrolled up with the arrow (or sometimes pgup) key.
