New This post via Redhat 8 running under VPC on Win 2k

Just installed latest Connectix Virtual PC (ver5) on Win2000 & then installed Redhat 8.0 as a guest.

Install went ok except on 1st go when setting Xwin display & display adapter I requested it test the config & that screwed the screen by shrinking it & making it unuseable. I did manual log in & corrected the problem but decided to do complete re-install just to be sure it would go ok if I opted not to test the Xwin display config - it went ok 2nd time.

The performance on my DELL notebook is very acceptable (512MB Ram) 850Mhz PIII processor.

Am running a DHCP virtual network connenction (supported by VPC) also have web server running as well as Samba.

The new eye-candy in RH8 is as good as WindowsXP in terms of the smooth icons. The fonts in Mozilla are much better & I understand we can now easily set other fonts by loading them into a special dir in Redhat.

Later this week plan to install Redhat server edition 2.1 on a 4 processor IBM netfinity server. Will be interesting to see how that goes.

New Eye candy?
On RH 8?

You crazy.

I must prefer my RH 7.3 / KDE desktop.
It feels "sharper". Those icons on RH 8
are nasty.

I've got them side by side in front of
me. That is why I started the LVM thread
below, since the RH 8 comes with the LVM
prepackaged. Lazy, ain't I?
New Ummmm....
Barry,

LVM comes in 7.3 also sir... So does JFS. LVM, in it's current incarnation in Completely GPL... including the software needed to "configure it"

8.0 is a Great Stab at the (L)user community. To me it feels GOOEY.... not GUI. But my wife likes it... Prefers it actually compared to XP.

I have XP now on 2 machines at home... RH8.0 dual booting... Big change from before... Wife selects Linux all the time... even for the games... My big problem is ~4600MB... GEEZ!

Your friendly Homeland Security Officer reminds:
Hold Thumbprint to Screen for 5 seconds, we'll take the imprint, or
Just continue to type on your keyboard, and we'll just sample your DNA.
New Ummm, I figured that out
But so was GFS.

And why toss in JFS? JFS is an IBM product,
and I believe IBM REALLY loves Linux, and
their business model allows for a huge
amount of contribution.

Much different than Sistina, a 2 product
company, one of which WAS GPL, but no longer.

As far a the 7.3 to 8.0 difference, I don't
use any file system or vm or raid driver that
has been out, in use, for quite some time.
And on the corp machines, no low level
infrastucture piece that is not "packaged" for
a while. Yeah, I'm a baby. In this case, I
have been aware of LVM for a while, but never
looked closely since I've been mostly out
of sysadmining for abou a year.
