New A couple neat Mozilla tips, a few Warpstock comments

Mozilla Tips

While at Warpstock I attended a presentation on Mozilla and IBM's involvement and learned about these features. Nobody in the audience knew about them, so I suspect this might be useful info to some of you here.

1) Highlight a section of displayed text(such as Warpstock), the right-click. One of the menu options will be Web Search for "Warpstock". Select it and new window will open up with the search results.

2) highlight a section of the site, right-click, and select the option View Selection Source. This will show you the HTML block that generated what you selected.

Warpstock Comments

While Warpstock was fun, getting to see old friends and all, it was also a little depressing. One reason is that attendance has gone down each year. I've also decided to get an iMac, so it felt like a going away party too.

[link|http://www.serenity-systems.com|Serenity Systems] showed off their 1.1 installer for [link|http://www.serenity-systems.com/ecs/ecs-main.html|eComStation]. Very much improved over 1.0. They also redid their pricing so that if you already have, or are not interested in, the extra add-on programs(Smart Suite, HOBlink X11 server, etc.), then you can buy just eComStation at a lower price. They are also gearing up for a big push. They didn't feel that eCS 1.0 was ready enough for such a push(they're right about that - I had problems installing on long-support SCSI drives). What they showed impressed me enough that even though I'm getting an iMac, I went ahead and pre-ordered the 1.1 release and the App-Pack(I use Smart Suite and the 1.1 App Pack includes the updated Smart Suite 1.7).

Virtual PC 5 was for sale at $200. This price included both the OS/2 and the Windows version. Normally it's $350 for just one. I was checking it out and they gave me a free copy. Turns out my emulator ports are used for part of their performance testing and that was their way of saying thanks. Certainly made my day :-)

A few people were using the "rumoured" OS/2 port of ALSA. It currently only supports Sound Blaster Live!, Cirrus Logic CS4281(X2x), Advance Logic ALS4000, C-Media CMI 8738 and Intel ICH(I think there was more after ICH).

During the closing session it was revealed that "Warpstock Inc" might not be around next year. They were organized as a non-profit group, but judgment was just passed that while they met 99% of the requirements, the fact that they cater to a single product means they're "promoting IBM" and thus cannot have the non-profit status. While paying back taxes isn't a problem, penalties and late-fees will bankrupt the group. I left before this discussion ended, so I don't know the final verdict for Warpstock 2003.

New View Selection source is Mozilla 1.1 only (I think)
New You are correct
just did a search and sure enough it's new to 1.1. Found out it's also been available for Internet Exploiter since the 4.x days - but only as an add-on that hindered performance, so only web developers installed it.

New Slick! Works on OS X as well

trying it out under SuSE 8.0, which I'm running under Virtual PC for OS/2 :-) Virtual PC is working very well. Installing SuSE took a while, but once installed it runs well.

You say, "Williams, how can you get away with such political incorrectness?" It's easy. I'm a tenured professor, and I have diversified sources of income -- plus, I don't have much longer in this world.
