Welcome to IWETHEY!

New Arrrgghhh bit by Outlook PST file bug again!
Reformatted, reinstalled, and just put Outlook back in. Same version as I had before, same install CD. Backed up my PST file to a CDR disk, copied it to the C drive, removed the read-only flag on it, but Outlook refuses to read it! "Properties for This Information Service Must Be Defined Prior to Use" "The file normans.pst is not a Personal Folders file" yells the paperclip! Goodbye old mail and contacts, etc! I should have exported it to a text file and then backed that up instead of the PST file.

[link|http://www.all-windows.com/outlook_faq.html|Outlook FAQs] say that it just needs to have the read-only flag taken off of it, which I already did! [link|http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=KB;EN-US;q258468&|Even Microsoft says so] yet it is on my C drive, read-only attribute turned off and I still get that error!

This has happened to me before, but I was too tired to think of exporting it to a CSV file or something. Any PST Repair programs out there that can fix it? Otherwise I lost all my email contacts, old email messages, etc again! :(

I was hoping that I can import it into another email program at home. But no such luck, everything uses Outlook to convert PST files and if Outlook cannot read it, I am screwed!

New try to import it into another, blank defined pst.
You *have* used scanpst.exe, right? You have applied appropriate service packs to your installation, right?
"A civilian gang of thieving lobbyists for the military industrial complex is running the White House. If to be against them is considered unpatriotic -- Hell, then call me a traitor."

New Yes and yes
[link|http://www.slipstick.com/problems/scanpst.htm|You mean this one] and and tools associated on that same page? The other two tools point to missing web pages, and the third link is to a recovery service that charges to recover the data. The utility found on the Office CD at [link|http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=KB;EN-US;q272227&|DRIVELetter:\\PFILES\\COMMON\\SYSTEM\\MAPI\\1033\\95 named scanpst.exe] was run. Windows 98, Outlook 2000 SP2. All service packs have been installed. Same software versions as before the reformat, except that the file or hard drive may have been damaged before the format?

I tried importing to a blank PST, same error. The file that scanpst.exe makes is blank, the normans.bak is still full of data.

I am about to go and get my old DOS based util, hstrip, if a copy of it is still floating around on the Internet somewhere. Filter out all the Non-ASCII stuff and leave the ASCII text behind. Maybe I can copy and paste the remains into the new email program?

I want so much to kick the Outlook habit!

New Could it be possible that a service pack
was added between the time that I had reformatted and reinstalled? I usually keep current with all service packs for security reasons.

Office Update says "There are no updates available for download. Your Office products are up-to-date!"

Another is that I didn't install Norton AntiVirus yet, would that prevent me from reading the PST file? Is there some sort of protection that NAV adds to the PST files?

Keep in mind that this is a new install of Windows 98. I tried XP Pro but got registry errors and suspect that my hard drive was in a state that it needed a reformat. I was trying to test something out on XP pro on my system because my brother's system was having problems. I traced my brother's problems to a bad memory chip or motherboard issue. I won't know which until I can use a different motherboard from one of my spare systems. A new set of DIMMs seemed to make the problem go away, and then the next day it came back. But the only problem that my system has is apparently reading my PST file that I backed up. It is only 26M in size, nowhere near that 2G limit. I would like to at least get my contact info from it, so I don't lose phone numbers, email addresses, etc.

New No.
Sounds like the .PST file is trashed.

Seriously.

New Second time this has happened
seriously. Anyone who cares send an email to nking at telocity.com and I'll add you to my new address book. Once I get Mozilla Mail configured. Goodbye Outlook, I'll use it for work, but for home I'll use something else.

New I use squirrelmail almost all the time, now.
Of course, I run my own server (if you're using telocity DSL, you can too, no?). It's a [link|http://www.squirrelmail.org/|php webmail][link|http://www.squirrelmail.org/|*] package with some cool plugins, optional (and easy to write) themes, plugins, etc.

New OT your sig
I have come to the conclusion that when you believe everyone is out to get you, you simply have a healthy outlook. When you beleive they are working in concert, that's when you are paranoid.

New I remember that modification, too - and I can't remember,
either - it must be the mind control rays from the Major League Baseball satellite...

New Yes I did have one up
but I had reformatted my server and haven't had time to reinstall everything yet.

I renewed my domain name, and will host it on my Telocity system soon.

Any suggestions for good Windows based POP3/SMTP mail servers? Obviously I don't want to run Exchange Server, but some freeware or open sourced mail server. One that won't allow the spammers to take advantage of, one that I can set authorization on so that only people I give a password to can use it.
