New Plan ahead
Use print preview a lot. Don't have row after row of data, leave some space about every 60th row (or whatever number fits your font size and makes a full page)

But, I guess I have no real choice.

Probably Lotus had none either, and so MS
didn't need to compete on that. MS is
such a monkey-see.
