WC Fields was a brilliant man, Richard Burton the same. Now lets examine teetotallers. George Armstrong Custer, Jimmy Carter (great man but poor president) Osama bin Laden, Musharref and the rest of mahound's boys. One has nothing to do with the other. Who knows what other damage he did to himself whilst in his younger drinking (possibly snorting) daze.
