New Salman Rushdie on unintended consequences

Exerpt-
...if, in today's highly charged atmosphere, the US embarks on the huge, risky military operation suggested by the Vice-President, Dick Cheney, then the result may well be the creation of that united Islamic force which was bin Laden's dream.

Saudi Arabia would almost certainly feel obliged to expel US forces from its soil (thus capitulating to one of bin Laden's main demands). Iran - which recently fought a long, brutal war against Iraq - would surely support its erstwhile enemy and may even come into the conflict on the Iraqi side.

The entire Arab world would be radicalised and destabilised. What a disastrous twist of fate it would be if the feared Islamic jihad were brought into being not by the al-Qaeda gang but by the President of the US and his close advisers.
"A civilian gang of thieving lobbyists for the military industrial complex is running the White House. If to be against them is considered unpatriotic -- Hell, then call me a traitor."
-- Hunter S. Thompson

New What a crock
The Islam world united against the U.S.?

Forget how ridiculous *that* notion is on its face. F-them, nobody except Israel in the region is a real ally anyway. Better to bring problems to a boil now than let them fester.
The lawyers would mostly rather be what they are than get out of the way even if the cost was Hammerfall. - Jerry Pournelle
New Excellent rebuttal
"What a crock"

Completely demolishes every single point made. I bow before the superiority of your logic.

New The Bottom Line
..is that nationalism in the Islamic world will overcome American military power (I hesitate to call the chickenshits in DC Americans), the way it happened in Vietnam. The mind-numbingly stupid people in power here think 900 years of violent history can be ignored, just as they ignored 2000 years of civil war in SE Asia.

The Cheneys and Rumsfelds of the country want ongoing, continuous, Orwellian warfare.
